Noorjehan and Dilip Kumar

MUST WATCH

=========================================

Friends,

The musical evening of 11th February 1982 proved to be an immemorable one for the Hindi film industry and its fans. What was so special about it? Well, Hindi film industry had completed 50 years since the first movie "Alam Ara" was released which had the sound on the screen for the first time. To celebrate this milestone, Cinema Vision India (owned by famous narrator Siddharth Kak) along with Music Directors Association had organized a special programme at Shanmukhanand Hall in the then Bombay viz. "Mortal Men Immortal Melodies". The program also had another reason to be organized.

Noorjehan and Dilip Kumar
The erstwhile Queen of the Hindi film industry Malika-E-Tarannum Noorjehan was visiting Bombay for the first time after the partition. Hence fans were more than eager to see her and listen to her evergreen melodious voice. The organizers had invited many stars of the Hindi cinema. The Tragedy King Dilip Kumar was present on stage to welcome his close friend Noorjehan. Shabana Azmi was compering the entire show. The legendary music composers, the doyens of the Hindi film music such as Anil Biswas, Naushad, Hemant Kumar were present. Many singers from the 1940s, 50s and 60s such as G. M. Durrani, Surendra, Rajkumari, Meena Kapur, Jagjit Kaur, Usha Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood Mahendra Kapoor and Ashok Kumar were also gracing the occasion. To top it all, Lata Mangeshkar herself was waiting to greet and meet her close friend Noorjehan after about 35 years.

Noorjehan ruled the Hindi film industry between 1939 and 1948 through her melodious songs. After she left India to settle down in Pakistan, Lata undoubtedly was the Queen. But, today the Malika-E-Tarannum was back to enthrall the audience with her sweet voice. And thus posed the challenge in front of Lata to prove why she ruled after Noorjehan. Lata was scheduled to sing before Noorjehan, hence it was more challenging.

And which song did Lata choose to prove her mettle? It was none other than "Sajan Ki Galiyan Chhod Chale" from the 1949 film "Bazar" composed by the one and only Shyam Sundar! Composed in Raag Pahadi and in Punjabi style, Lata had recorded this song in 1948/49 while being under the influence of Noorjehan. And today, after almost 3 decades, she was going to sing the same song, now in her own style, in front of her idol - Noorjehan! What a moment it must have been.

This was the perfect appreciation for the musical genius of Shyam Sundar by the equally genius the great Lata Mangeshkar!

Shyam Sundar was born in Lahore and since his childhood was fan of Master Ghulam Haider's compositions. Shyam Sundar was a good Violin player and used to be the lead performer in the orchestra run by Ustad Jhande Khan. He assisted Master Ghulam Haider for a while. He got an opportunity to compose for few Punjabi films since Master ji was extremely occupied with his work. He composed music for 4 Punjabi films viz. "Sohni Kumaran" (1939), "Laila Majnu" and "Jagga Daku" (1940) and "Gul Baloch" (1942). Songs from all the 4 films became popular.

In 1938, Shyam Sundar accompanied the legendary singer from those times Kundan Lal Saigal to Lahore for a concert. Due to the power failure, Saigal saab had to stop his performance. The organizers called in a young boy from the audience to engage the audience till the power is back. The young boy played magic on the audience with his vibrant voice. Both Saigal saab and Shyam Sundar praised the young boy. He was none other than Mohammad Rafi who himself became a legend in the later years! Shyam Sundar was so impressed with Rafi's voice that he gave him his first break in the films in the film "Gul Baloch" (1942).

Shyam Sundar's first Hindi film was "Nai Kahani" (1943) produced by Prabhat Film Company. G. M. Durrani sang "Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare" which became an instant hit.

1945 saw Noorjehan singing for the first time for Shyam Sundar in "Gaaon Ki Gori (Village Girl)". The film had total 11 songs out of which Noorjehan had sung 6 solos. All were extremely popular. In particular, the two songs viz. "Baithi Hoon Teri Yaad Ka" and "Kis Tarah Bhoolega Dil" are considered to be Noorjehan's best songs till date. One of these songs is being presented later in this blog. The film also had "Aji Dil Ho Kaboo Mein" - a duet by G. M. Durrani and Mohammad Rafi. This is supposed to be Rafi's first Hindi song.

Shyam Sundar composed another wonderful song in "Dev Kanya" (1946) viz. "Piya Milan Ko Jaanewale Sambhal Sambhal Kar Chal" sung by Amirbai Karnataki. This song was based on multiple Ragas such as Yaman Kalyan, Shivranjani, Bahar and Asawari.

1948 saw yet another musical hit "Actress" by Shyam Sundar. Mohammad Rafi's two of the memorable songs "Hum Apne Dil Ka Fasana Unhe Suna Na Sake" and "Ai Dil Meri Aahon Mein Itna To Asar Aaye" are remembered till date.

Shyam Sundar's popularity touched the sky high with 3 hit movies viz. "Bhai Jaan" (1945), "Gaaon Ki Gori (Village Girl)" (1945) and "Actress" (1948). He was the most sought after music composer in those days. Sadly, he could not digest the success and got into the habit of drinking liquor.

1949 is supposed to the Golden year in Shyam Sundar's career. He delivered 3 movies "Bazar", "Char Din" and "Lahore" this year. There were 31 songs composed for these 3 movies. All the songs achieved greater success and popularity. "Anjamein Mohabbat Kuchh Bhi Nahin" and "Ik Bewafa Ki Yaad Ne Tadapake Maar Dala" from "Char Din" are 2 of the best songs of Suraiyya. Out of 31 songs, Lata contributed to 13, 7 of which were Solo songs. Lata, in those days, had influence of Noorjehan. It is evident when you hear her songs from "Bazar" and "Lahore". Mohammad Rafi and Suraiyya had sung 4 solos each.

Due to Shyam Sundar's continued addiction towards drinking, Lata had refused to sing for him. Therefore, for 2 movies released in 1951 viz. "Dholak" and "Kaale Badal", he had roped in new singers in the form of Sulochana Kadam (mostly known as Sulochana Chavan) and Pushpa Hans. "Dholak" turned out to be the biggest hit in Sulochana Kadam's career. She sang 9 out of 18 songs composed for both the movies, out of which 7 solos. And all were wonderfully melodious songs.

"Alif Laila" released in 1953 proved to be the last movie for Shyam Sundar. "Bahar Aayi Khili Kaliyan" by Lata and "Kya Raat Suhani Hai" by Lata and Rafi were popular gems. The song "Mere Nagmon Mein Un Mastana" by Talat Mehmood is considered to be one of his best songs.

Shyam Sundar died a tragic death during the making of "Alif Laila". His close friend and equally talented composer Madan Mohan completed rest of the songs. However, it is not known till date which songs were composed by whom.

In a career spanning 14 years from 1939 to 1953, Shyam Sundar gave music to 4 Punjabi and 17 Hindi films. He composed approx. 147 songs in 17 Hindi films. In 3 years i.e. from 1949 to 1951, he composed 78 songs, that is around 53% of his total songs! 106 out of 147 (72%) songs were contributed by just 6 singers - Shamshad Begum, Noorjehan, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Suraiyya and Sulochana Kadam.

We will always remember Shyam Sundar through his beautiful compositions from the films "Gaaon Ki Gori (Village Girl)", "Lahore", "Bazar" and "Dholak".

Presenting below are 4 of Shyam Sundar's best compositions. All songs are MUST WATCH.

1) Baithi Hoon Teri Yaad Ka Lekar Ke Sahara - Gaaon Ki Gori (Village Girl) (1945) - Noorjehan - Lyricist Wali Sahab

Noorjehan played the female lead role in this film. The male lead role was played by Prem Adeeb. The composition has Violin as a major instrument. Noorjehan's Gaayaki is difficult to explain in words. The song has a certain pace and accompanying instruments only add to its beauty. Listen to the Noorjehan's voice throw on the words "Neend" and "Haaye" in "Akhsar Meri Aankhon Ne Tuze Neend Mein, Haaye Tuze Neend Mein Dhoondha" line. Noorjehan's young, sharp voice projects the character's agony so effectively! Enjoy the song.

2) Hum Apne Dil Ka Fasana Unhe Suna Na Sake - Actress (1948) - Mohammad Rafi - Lyricist Naqshab

One of the best Rafi songs ever. Shyam Sundar's arrangement of accompanying instruments never overpower the singer's voice or the lyrics itself.

3) Sajan Ki Galiyan Chhod Chale - Bazar (1949) - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi

List of Lata's Top 20 songs would be incomplete without this song. Picturized on Nigar Sultana, this song has Violin, Flute and Tabla throughout. The singing is synchronized with the Tabla's Theka. Lata's Harkati/Murkati are worth listening.

4) Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi - Lahore (1949) - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist Rajendra Krishna

One cannot talk about Shyam Sundar's career without mentioning this particular song. One can easily say that this song is the signature song of Shyam Sundar. The start without accompaniment itself captures audiences' attention. Just out of the world composition and equally outstanding Gayaki by Lata. Hats off to both for giving us this gem of a song!

Hope you would have liked the blog. Would welcome your comment. Thank you.

Rewards come for those who are not afraid of taking risks

Munimji Songs Video Playlist

The film industry is a very strange place to be in, they say. With one hit film, an actor can rise to the heavens while with one flop, he/she can come down very fast. Thus, many a time, we have seen actors being extremely conscious of their images in front of the public. They would like to stick to the roles that have given them success in the past and do not experiment with roles to avoid risk of being a flop. However, there are actors who dare to take risks and thereby garner the rewards that come along with it. One such actor is Pran Kishanchand or just Pran as we all dearly know him. We know Pran to be the greatest villain of the Hindi films and also one of the greatest character actors.

However, what we don't know is that once upon a time (from 1940 to 1947), Pran had played lead roles in Hindi and Punjabi films! His debut film was a Pujabi film viz. "Yamla Jat" (1940). Pran's first Hindi film was "Khandan" (1942) in which he played the lead role. And guess what, his heroin was none other than the legendary singer actor Noorjehan, who was only 15 then! Pran's career as a Hero lasted from 1940 to 1947, after which he switched over to Villain roles and made a name for himself. His first Hindi film in a Villain role was "Ziddi" (1948) in which Dev Anand and Kamini Kaushal were male and female leads respectively.

Pran would be the only actor who has not only played different roles in films like Hero, Villain and Character Actor, but also sung songs on the screen! Let's look at some of these songs:

Pran as a Hero:

"Ud Jaa Ud Jaa Panchhi" - Khandan (1942) - Composer Master Ghulam Haider - Singers Noorjehan and Master Ghulam Haider

Pran as a Villain:

"Aa Ke Seedhi Lagee Jaise Dil Pe Katariya" - Half Ticket (1962) - Composer Salil Chowdhury - Singer Kishore Kumar

Pran in a Character Actor role:

"Kasme Vaade Pyaar Wafa Sab" - Upkaar (1967) - Composer Kalyanji-Anandji - Singer Manna Dey

Brief about the film:

The story is about a born rich girl - Roopa (Nalini Jaywant) who has returned from foreign with her brother Shekhar. Her father Captain Suresh wants her to get married to Ratan (Pran) who is the son of Captain Suresh's close friend. Malati (Nirupa Roy) works as a house maid at Captain Suresh's house. Her son Amar (Dev Anand) works for Captain Suresh under the guise of a Munimji (Accountant). One day, Captain Suresh comes to know about the dacoit "Kala Ghoda" (Black Horse) coming to loot the village. He calls police. Meanwhile, Roopa happens to meet a young, energetic, handsome boy Raj (Dev Anand) and over a period of time both fall in love with each other. However, what Roopa does not know is that her fiancée Raj is actually Amar (or Munimji). Raj and Roopa go for a jungle ride, where this funny yet beautiful song begins. What happens next in the film? Well, do watch the film "Munimji" which is available on YouTube.

"Munimji" had 9 songs composed by the legendary composer Sachin Dev Burman and penned by the great Sahir Ludhiyanvi and Shailendra. Out of the 9 songs, Lata sang 5 wonderfully melodious solos while Geeta Dutt had 1 solo and 1 duet with Hemant Kumar. Hemant Kumar had 1 solo song "Shivji Bihane Chale Palki Sajayke". We hear a totally different Hemant Kumar in this genre, it is one of my favorite songs on which I will write in detail later. The most popular song of the movie was "Jeevan Ke Safar Mein Rahi" which was sung by the great Kishore Kumar. After hearing this song, you can be sure that no one else other than Kishore da would have made complete justice to the song. It's so mesmerising - everything, the composition, the singing, the shoot and the acting by Dev Anand and Nalini Jaywant - a MUST WATCH.

You can watch the video playlist of all the "Munimji" songs here - "Munimji Songs Video Playlist"

USP of the song being presented today:

1. It's one of the great romantic songs from the pair of Dev Anand and Hemant Kumar. To our surprise, it was only S. D. Burman who dared to cast different singers for Dev Anand. E.g.

  • Kishore Kumar in "Munimji", "Funtoosh", etc.
  • Hemant Kumar in "Solva Saal", "Jaal", etc.
  • Mohammad Rafi in "Guide", "Kaala Bazar", "Tere Ghar Ke Saamane", etc. and
  • Talat Mehmood in "Taxi Driver"

2) If you hear Geeta Dutt's voice in this song, you will feel as if Asha Bhosale is singing. We all know that Asha ji, at the start of career in Hindi films as a singer, was influenced by Lata ji and Geeta ji. Geeta Dutt through her melodious and expressive singing has perfectly echoed the naughty side of the heroin.

3) The third singer - who attempts to sing - is perhaps Pran himself; however not sure since there is no information available on the internet about it.

4) Just observe Pran's acting in this song particularly the first two minutes - simply marvelous. He is asked to sing and dance - which are not his forte - however due to his love for the lady, he attempts both reluctantly. All the helpless emotions are demoed so aptly by Pran, hats off to him. You cannot stop yourself from laughing at him.

Enjoy the song (video just above this English version). Hope you will like it. Appreciate if you can leave a comment and spread the word. Thank you.

14: The shortest Hindi film song ever

Namaskaar Friends,

Very happy to share the next song in the अनमोल रतन series. Shortest Blog for the Shortest song. 😊Hope you will like it.

The English version of the blog will follow the Marathi version below.

(Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon)

Film: Afsana (1951)

Director: B. R. Chopra

Cast: Ashok Kumar, Veena, Pran, Jeevan, Kuldeep Kaur, Cuckoo, Baby Tabassum

Lyrics: Ghafil Harnalvi

Composer: Husnalal Bhagatram

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

MUST WATCH

MUST WATCH

Hello Friends,

Since the Hindi films went vocal, music has been their integral part. We have been enthralled by songs written, composed and sung by many great artists. During 1930's and 1940's, a lot of films had almost 8-10 songs in it, with each song lasting for 3-4 minutes. Some songs used to be very long ~8-10 min. duration. However such was the genius of those artists that the audience just loved all the songs. Many films we hear were popular only because of its wonderful songs.

Brief about the film:

"Afsana" was produced and directed by B. R. Chopra in 1951. Ratan, Chaman (both played by Ashok Kumar) and Meera (Veena - who was later known for her vamp roles) are childhood friends. While Ratan is an innocent and simple boy, Chaman is naughty and crafty. Meera loves Ratan while Chaman loves Meera, however she ignores him. One fine day, all go to a Mela and are caught in a huge storm. Ratan goes missing. Meera is shocked but decides to wait for Ratan. After few years, all grew up. Ratan survives the storm but lands in an orphanage and grows up as Ashok - the Judge. Chaman and his assistant Chatpat (Jeevan) run a business. Mohan (Pran) is Ashok's friend and Leelabai (Kuldeep Kaur) is Ashok's wife. Watch the film to understand what happens to Ratan/Ashok, Meera, Mohan and Chaman.

Few wonderful songs from the film "Afsana" composed by the legendary Pt. Husnalal-Bhagatram

१) Woh Paas Bhi Rahkar Paas Nahin - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist Asad Bhopali - MUST WATCH

२) Woh Aaye Baharein Laye Baji Shahnai - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist Asad Bhopali

३) Qismat Bigadi Duniya Badali - Mukesh - Lyricist Asad Bhopali - MUST WATCH

४) Duniya Ek Kahani Re Bhaiyya - Mohammad Rafi - Lyricist Saraswati Kumar "Deepak"

५) Aaj Kuchh Aisi Chot Lagi Hai - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist Asad Bhopali

USP of the song being presented today:

1) This is perhaps the shortest song ever in Hindi films - total duration only 1 min and 20 seconds!

2) Picturized on 2 villains - Pran and Kuldeep Kaur

3) The song is played in the background, no one sings on the screen

4) Pran - who was termed as the greatest ever Villain of the Hindi film industry - is seen to be doing a Western style dance with his partner

5) The tune of this song used to be played at the start of a very famous programme on Radio Ceylon

As the song starts, you will hear beautiful piece of Violin supported by Tabla and Flute in the background. The composer Pt. Husnalal-Bhagatram has composed this extra-ordinary song with very few instruments. I have previously written in detail about Pt. Husnalal-Bhagatram, you can read it here.

Lata's young but sharp voice has taken this song to another level. Please enjoy the video given just above this English version of the blog.

Hope you will like it. Appreciate if you can leave a comment or two. Thanks.
