गीत #१६: हुस्नवालों को ना दिल दो यह मिटा देते है

नमस्कार. आज सादर करत असलेले गाणे हे १९५० सालच्या "बाबुल" या चित्रपटातले आहे. या चित्रपटाचे संगीत दिग्दर्शक होते नौशाद. नौशाद हे या चित्रपटाचे निर्माते देखील होते. नौशाद यांनी संगीतकार म्हणून स्वतंत्रपणे काम १९४० साली सुरु केले. त्यांना पहिले यश मिळाले ते १९४२ सालच्या "शारदा" या चित्रपटामुळे. या चित्रपटात त्यांनी सुरैय्या या गायक-अभिनेत्रीला गायनाची पहिली संधी दिली होती. १९४४ सालच्या "रतन" या चित्रपटातील संगीत तुफान गाजले आणि त्यामुळे नौशाद हे हिंदी चित्रपटसृष्टीतील आघाडीचे संगीतकार झाले. असं म्हणतात की "रतन" च्या यशानंतर नौशाद प्रत्येक चित्रपटासाठी त्या काळात रु. २५,०००/- इतके मानधन घेत असत! आणि ते देणारे निर्मातेही त्यांना मिळत असत इतकी त्यांच्या संगीताला मागणी होती! "अनमोल घडी" आणि "शाहजहाँ" (१९४६), "दर्द", "ऐलान" (१९४७), "अनोखी अदा", "मेला" (१९४८), "अंदाज", "दिल्लगी", "दुलारी" (१९४९) हे नौशाद यांचे गाजलेले चित्रपट.
नौशाद यांनी अनेक गायिकांबरोबर काम केले उदा. नूरजहाँ, अमीरबाई कर्नाटकी, जोहराबाई अंबालावाली, शमशाद बेगम, राजकुमारी, सुरैय्या, लता मंगेशकर, आशा भोसले, इ. पण पुरुष गायक मात्र संख्येने थोडे होते. मोहम्मद रफी हे त्यांचे सर्वात आवडते गायक होते. जवळपास १५० गाणी त्यांनी रफी यांच्याकडून गाऊन घेतली. मुकेश यांना नौशाद यांनी "मेला" (१९४८), "अनोखी अदा" (१९४८), "अंदाज" (१९४९) आणि "साथी" (१९६८) या चारच चित्रपटांसाठी घेतले. वास्तविक पाहता मुकेश यांची काही सर्वोत्कृष्ट गाणी ही नौशाद यांच्या संगीत दिग्दर्शनाखालीच आहेत. असे असताना देखील "अंदाज" नंतर नौशाद यांनी मुकेशना का घेतले नाही हे एक कोडेच आहे!
नौशाद आणि तलत महमूद ही जोडी मात्र फक्त आणि फक्त "बाबुल" (१९५०) या एकाच चित्रपटासाठी एकत्र आली. त्यांनी नंतर एकत्र काम केले नाही हे रसिकांचे दुर्दैव. "बाबुल" या चित्रपटात एकूण १३ गाणी आहेत. सर्व मिळून अंदाजे ४५ मिनिटांची गाणी आहेत. त्यातील तलतने २ सोलो आणि ४ गाणी इतरांबरोबर गायली आहेत. आणि सर्वच्या सर्व गाणी अतिशय लोकप्रिय आहेत.
अरे हो! नाही म्हणायला तलतने आणखीन एक गाणे नौशाद यांच्यासाठी १९६८ सालच्या "आदमी" चित्रपटात मोहम्मद रफी यांच्याबरोबर गायले होते. गाणे होते - "कैसी हसीन रात बहारों की आज है". चित्रपटात रफी साहेबांचा आवाज दिलीपकुमार यांच्यासाठी तर तलत यांचा आवाज मनोजकुमार यांच्यासाठी वापरला जाणार होता. पण कुठे काय बिनसले माहिती नाही, पण चित्रपटातील मनोजकुमार यांचे गाणे तलत यांच्याऐवजी महेंद्र कपूर यांनी गायले! आज YouTube वर दोन्ही versions बघायला/ऐकायला मिळतात. असो.
थोडेसे चित्रपटाविषयी:
दिलीपकुमार आणि नर्गिस ही त्या काळातील लोकप्रिय जोडी आणि नौशाद यांचे अप्रतिम संगीत. यामुळे हा चित्रपट व त्यातील गाणी तुफान लोकप्रिय झाली. १९५० साली या चित्रपटाने जवळपास एक कोटी पंचवीस लाख रुपयांचा गल्ला जमवला होता!
अशोक (दिलीप कुमार) एका श्रीमंत घरातला मुलगा असतो. तो पोस्टमास्तरची नोकरी करत असतो. पण नोकरी करत असतानासुद्धा फावल्या वेळात तो चित्र काढणे, कविता लिहिणे इ. शौक पुरे करत असतो. ज्या पोस्ट ऑफिसमध्ये तो नोकरी करत असतो तेथून निवृत्त झालेले पोस्टमास्तर यांची मुलगी बेला (नर्गिस) ही अतिशय गरीब, साधी मुलगी अशोकच्या प्रेमात पडते आणि त्याच्याशी लग्न करण्याचे स्वप्न बघायला लागते. तिचा लाघवी स्वभाव अशोकला आवडत असतो, पण त्याचे प्रेम उषा (मुनवर सुलताना) या एका जमीनदाराच्या मुलीवर बसते. उषाच्या वाढदिवसानिमित्त आयोजित केलेल्या समारंभात उषा आवाज खराब असल्याने गाऊ शकत नाही, त्यामुळे लोकं अशोकला गाण्याचा आग्रह करतात. आणि तो हे अप्रतिम गीत सादर करतो.
आजचे गाणे हे तलत महमूद यांनी गायलेले असून दिलीपकुमार यांनी पडद्यावर ते अतिशय ताकदीने सादर केले आहे. तलत-दिलीप ही गायक-अभिनेता जोडी आपल्याला अनेक गाण्यांतून दिसली आहे. ही सर्व गाणी अतिशय गाजलेली आहेत. काही गाण्यांची यादी खाली देत आहे, त्याकडे नजर टाकली तर लक्षात येईल.

आज जे गाणे सादर करत आहे त्या गाण्याची काही वैशिष्ट्ये:
२) जी तरुण मुले प्रेमात पडू इच्छितात किंवा पडली आहेत त्यांना सावध करणारे हे गाणे आहे. त्यांचा प्रियकर किंवा प्रेयसी कशी असू शकते याचे यथायोग्य वर्णन शकील बदायुनी यांनी या गीतात केले आहे.
३) या गाण्याची चाल इतकी अप्रतिम आहे की साथीला फक्त हार्मोनियम आणि तबला असूनही गाणे उठावदार झाले आहे.
४) तलतची कसदार, भावनाप्रधान गायकी आणि दिलीपकुमारचा अभिनय या दोन्हींचा सुरेख संगम या गाण्यात झाला आहे. तसा तो आपल्याल्या "ये हवा ये रात ये चाँदनी" या "संगदिल" चित्रपटातील गाण्यातही दिसतो. दोन्ही गाण्यात दिलीपकुमार ते गाणे उप-नायिकेला उद्देशून गातो न की नायिकेला. "बाबुल" मध्ये नर्गिस ऐवजी मुनवर सुलतानाला तर "संगदिल" मध्ये मधुबाला ऐवजी शम्मीला!
५) सुप्रसिद्ध गज़ल गायक मेहदी हसन यांनी त्यांच्या सुरुवातीच्या काळात एका मैफलीत हे गाणे गाऊन प्रेक्षकांकडून भरपूर वाहवा मिळवली होती - हा किस्सा माझे मित्र आणि फिल्म संगीताचे अभ्यासक अद्वैत धर्माधिकारी यांनी सांगितला आहे.

Presenting today is a beautiful song from the 1950 film "Babul" produced and musically composed by Naushad. Naushad was the most sought after music composer in 1950. He started his career in 1940; however, it was 1942 film "Sharada" which gave him his first success. In this film, Naushad had given a break to Suraiyya who went on to become one of the most popular singer-actor later. And then came the superhit film "Ratan" in 1944. Naushad's songs became a hit and he became the household name. He was so popular that he began to demand Rs. 25,000/- for every film, this is way back in 1944! Surprisingly, he got the producers who had a complete faith in Naushad's abilities and were ready to pay him the amount he had demanded.
After the grand success of "Ratan", Naushad continued his finest run and gave us many more gems through the films like "Anmol Ghadi" and "Shahjehan" (1946), "Dard", "Ailaan" (1947), "Anokhi Ada", "Mela" (1948) and "Andaz", "Dulari", "Dillagi" (1949).
Naushad worked with almost all female singers of those times E.g. Noorjehan, Ameerbai Karnataki, Zoharabai Ambalawali, Shamshad Begum, Suraiyya, Rajkumari, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale to name a few. Compared to female singers, the number of male singers with whom Naushad worked was less. His favorite male singer was the legendary Mohammad Rafi who sang approx. 150 songs under Naushad. While Mukesh had only 26 songs for Naushad in 4 films viz. "Mela" (1948), "Anokhi Ada" (1948), "Andaz" (1949) and "Saathi"(1968). In spite of singing some of his best songs for Naushad, one still cannot explain why Naushad did not use Mukesh any further.
Talat Mahmood had unfortunately sung for Naushad only in "Babul" (1950). This film had total 13 songs in it out of which Talat sang 2 wonderful solos and 4 duets. All 13 songs were extremely melodious and popular. Yet Naushad did not work with Talat again, and thus his fans were left disappointed.
My friend Advait Dharmadhikari updated me that Talat had also sung one more song for Naushad in the 1968 film "Aadmi" viz. "Kaisi Haseen Raat Baharon Ki Aaj Hai" along with Mohammad Rafi. However, Talat was replaced later by Mahendra Kapoor whose version with Rafi was used in the movie! Fortunately, both the versions are available on YouTube.
Brief about the film:
Thanks to the most popular on-screen pair of Dilip Kumar and Nargis along with extremely melodious music of Naushad, "Babul" was hugely successful, its gross collection was more than 1 crore in 1950!
Ashok (Dilip Kumar) hails from a wealthy family but works as a Post Master. He is fond of painting and writing poems which he manages thanks to his light work load at the Post Office. Bela (Nargis) who is the daughter of the retired Post Master of the same Post Office is a simple young girl. Bela falls in love with Ashok and starts dreaming about marrying him. However, Ashok falls for another wealthy young beautiful girl - Usha (Munawar Sultana) and both share their feelings with each other. Ashok is invited for Usha's Birthday celebration where he grudgingly agrees to sing a song, which is being presented here.
Today's song is sung by the legendary singer Talat Mahmood, and it has been picturized on Dilip Kumar. There are many beautiful songs that the duo of Talat and Dilip Kumar have given us. Some of them are:

USP of the song being presented today:
1) Talat Mahmood was known for his sad songs, Ghazals. However, this particular song is totally different in its mood contrary to what Talat's genre was. It is not just romantic but has a tinge of sarcasm to it.
2) The song presents a word of caution for those who are yet to fall in love or have already fallen. It aptly describes the probable nature of their would-be.
3) The composition of the song is so brilliant that one hardly notices that there are no accompanying instruments other than Harmonium and Tabla.
4) The song is a perfect blend of outstanding singing prowess of Talat Mahmood and equally brilliant on-screen performance by the great Dilip Kumar. I remember a similar song by the two "Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat Ye Chandani" from Sangdil (1951) composed by Sajjad Hussain. In both these songs, he hero of the film Dilip Kumar sings the song addressing it to the lady in the assisting role and not the Heroine herself. E.g. in "Babul", he sings it for Munawar Sultana and not Nargis, while in "Sangdil", he sings it for Shammi instead of Madhubala.
5) Lastly, my dear friend and Hindi film songs expert - Advait Dharmadhikari - told me that the song being presented today was sung by the legendary Ghazal singer Mehdi Hasan in one of his first few public programs and it evoked a great response.
