(as per Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema Indiancine.ma).

Rai Chand Boral

Rai Chand (R. C.) Boral - Pioneer of Playback Singing in Hindi films

Born: 19 October 1903, Kolkata

Died: 25 November 1981, Kolkata

The history of Indian Cinema dates back to 1897 (as per Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema Indiancine.ma) when a foreign photographer produced two short duration films viz. 'Coconut Fair' and 'Our Indian Empire'. However, the pioneer of the Bengali films - Hiralal Sen - is considered to be one of the first Indian film makers who produced a short duration film viz. 'Flowers of Persia'. In 1903, he filmed the popular Alibaba and Forty Thieves, the first full-length Indian film according to Wikipedia. However, it was not until 1913, when Dadasaheb Phalke - considered as the Father of Indian Cinema - made the first ever full length feature film viz. Raja Harishchandra. Since then for almost 18 years, the Indian films were mostly silent - no dialogues and no music.

Indian Film industry witnessed history being created when Ardeshir Irani produced the first Indian sound film viz. Alam Ara which was released on 14th March 1931. The film not only had dialogues, but also had 7 songs in it. The song 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Pyare' sung by Wazir Muhammad Khan is considered to be the first Hindi film song. However, in those days, the songs were sung by the actors themselves. Thus, Zubeida, K. C. Dey, K. L. Saigal, Ashok Kumar, Devika Rani, Shanta Apte, Naseem Bano, etc. all had their share of acting and singing in the films. But, this posed a huge limitation on the film producers and directors since they had to find an actor who can also sing well.

Rai Chand Boral

The Indian Film industry once again witnessed a historical change when Rai Chand Boral along with Pankaj Mullick successfully implemented the Playback singing in the Hindi films in 1935. The film was 'Dhoop Chhaon' produced by New Theatres and the song, "Main Khush Hona Chahoon", had an all women chorus led by Parul Ghosh with Suprabha Sarkar and Harimati picturized in a dance sequence.

For this reason, Rai Chand Boral (widely known as R. C. Boral) is considered to be the pioneer of the Playback music in Indian films. The legendary music composer of yesteryears Anil Biswas used to call R. C. Boral as the "Bhishma Pitamaha" of Indian film music.

Born on 19th Oct 1903, in an affluent and cultured family, Rai Chand's father Lal Chand Boral was a renowned Pakhawaj player and a classical singer.  Thanks to his father, Rai Chand was fortunate to have some great tutors in the form of Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan (Classical Singer from Rampur Gharana), Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan (Sarod player) and Ustad Masit Khan (Tabla player). Having such Gurus, Rai Chand soon learned to play Tabla and Piano and started doing the Saath Sangat. He attended several music conferences held in Lucknow, Banaras and Allahabad.

At a very young age of 24, in 1927, Rai Chand joined the Indian Broadcasting Corporation's Calcutta station as its Head of Music Department. This was the time when cinema was also getting popular across India. BN Sircar, an England-returned civil engineer, too, was fascinated by cinema. He produced two silent films, 'Chasher Meye' and 'Chor Kanta', and approached Rai Chand to compose for these films. He conducted live orchestra from a pit dug in front of the screen and rose to fame as a musical wizard.

When Sircar started his own company, New Theatres, on 10th February 1931, Rai Chand was the first choice to head its music department. The team of New Theatres had some very talented individuals like directors Debki Kumar Bose, Pramathesh Barua, cameramen like Nitin Bose and Bimal Roy, sound recordists like Mukul Bose, artists like Kundan Lal Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Pahadi Sanyal, Uma Shashi, Kanan Devi to name a few, and music composers like R. C. Boral, Pankaj Mullick and Timir Baran.

Kundan Lal Saigal
Rai Chand got major break in 1932 with 3 films starring K. L. Saigal. Saigal recorded his first song "Nawazish Chahiye Itni" composed by Rai Chand. However, it took another year (1933) for Rai Chand to prove his mettle as a composer when the New Theatre's film 'Puran Bhagat' was released. It had total 6 songs - 4 sung by Saigal and remaining two sung by K. C. Dey (Manna Dey's uncle). This was Rai Chand's first major hit. Saigal's songs like "Din Neeke Beete Jaate Hain", "Avsar Beeto Jaat Praani Tero", "Raadhe Raani De Daaro Naa Bansari Mori Re" and "Bhaju Main To Bhaav Se Shiri Giridhari" all became extremely popular with many households across India.

In 1934, the Hindi version of original Bangla film 'Chandidas' was released. The magic of Rai Chand's compositions once again mesmerized the audience. The songs "Tadpat Beete Din Rain", "Dekhat Vaako Hi Roop" (both by Saigal), "Basant Ritu Aayi Aali Phool Khile Daali" and "Marungi Marungi Sakhi" both by Uma Shashi, and "Saari Basant Nyaari Basant" by Pahadi Sanyal and Saigal - all songs were very popular, while the duet "Prem Nagar Mein Banaoongi Ghar Main" by Uma Shashi and Saigal is a song that is remembered even today.

Nitin Bose directed film 'The President' was released in 1937. Rai Chand teamed up with Pankaj Mullick to compose songs for this film. Two of his compositions "Ek Raje Ka Beta Lekar" and "Ek Bangala Bane Nyaaraa" both sung by Saigal became super hits.

Rai Chand had greatest success of his career in 1937 with Debaki Bose directed film "Vidyapati" starring Prithviraj Kapur, Kanan Devi, Pahadi Sanyal and Leela Desai. Rai Chand composed total 15 songs for this film. Songs like "Doley Hirday Ki Naiyya" (Kanan Devi); "Gokul Se Gaye Girdhari" and "Panghat Pe Kanhiya Aata Hai" (both by K. C. Day), "Ambuva Ki Dali Dali Jhum Rahi Hai Aali" (Kanan Devi and Dhoomi Khan) among other compositions were precious pearls of Rai Chand's treasury. Surprising and notably, none of the 15 songs of this film were sung by Saigal!

In 1938, Rai Chand had another hit with "Street Singer". Out of 4 songs, 3 were sung by Saigal and remaining one by Kanan Devi. "Babul Mora" (Saigal) is an immortal composition and even today is regarded as one of the greatest Bharavis of the Hindi film songs. It has also become the signature of Saigal's gaayaki in the sense that when we remember Saigal, this song comes first to our minds. Rai Chand had narrated his memories of this song in a rare program he did for Vividh Bharati sometime around 1981 - this song was picturized live while shooting. In the song, Saigal is seen with a harmonium in his hands and singing while walking on the road. All the musicians and technicians were walking along with Saigal for recording the song, and it got finalized in just one take! Isn't this amazing?

In fact, it is said that Rai Chand played a major role in shaping up Kundan Lal Saigal's career as a singer in Hindi films.

"Lagan" released in 1941 was possibly last film Saigal had with Rai Chand. It also had some of the wonderful songs like "Kahe Ko Raad Machayi", "Ye Kaisa Anyay Daataa", "Hat Gayi Lo Kaali Ghata" and "Koi Manushya Kitna Hi Bura Kyon Na Ho" all by Saigal were also hits.

In 1953, Rai Chand migrated to Bombay and composed music for "Dard-E-Dil". With New Theatres closed, Saigal's sad demise in 1947, changing trends of Hindi Cinema and its music and with the rise of equally talented composers like Sajjad, S. D. Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, C. Ramchandra, etc., Rai Chand also had to change the style of his compositions. Thus we saw a new Rai Chand in "Dard-E-Dil" along with new set of singers in Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale and Mohammad Rafi! 3 of the total 6 songs composed for "Dard-E-Dil" viz. "Na To Din Hi Din Wo Rahe Mere" (Lata), "Pyar Ho Gaya Muze" (Asha) and "Woh Kaun Hai Jo Nigahon Mein" (Rafi) were all extremely melodious songs that had a scent of fresh air. In the same year, Rai Chand composed 17 songs for "Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu".

"Swami Vivekananda" from 1955 and "Nilachale Mahaprabhu" from 1957 were his last Hindi films, while "Natun Fasal" - a Bengali film from 1960 - was his last film as a Composer.

In his musical career of 28 years from 1932 to 1960, Rai Chand composed music for around 75 films (36 Hindi and 39 Bengali). The list of his songs that I could compile from various sources has 296 Hindi songs in it (this list is only indicative and not 100% accurate as information about many songs is not available on the internet).

Some of the interesting statistics regarding Rai Chand's compositions(career spanning 28 years from 1932 to 1960):

  • Composed music for around 75 films (36 Hindi and 39 Bengali)
  • 296 Hindi songs - out of which 47 songs were sung by Kundan Lal Saigal either as Solo or with others
  • Between 1932 and 1939, Rai Chand composed 208 out of his 296 Hindi songs for 22 out of 36 Hindi films that he composed for, i.e. almost 70% of his work was done in just first 8 years!
  • In the first year at Bombay in 1953 (and his second last year in the Hindi film industry), Rai Chand composed 23 songs for 2 films
  • Lata Mangeshkar has sung total 8 songs under Rai Chand out of which 7 are solos

Some of the great compositions by Rai Chand Boral are given below. Please do click and listen to them.

  8. Ek Bangla Bane Nyara - President(1937) - K.L.Saigal - Lyricist Kedar Nath Sharma (MUST WATCH)
  9. Dole Hridaya Ki Naiyya - Vidyapati(1937) - Kanan Devi - Lyricist Kedar Sharma
  10. Jeevan Been Madhur Na Baaje Jhuthe Padh Gaye Taar - Street Singer(1938) - K.L.Saigal - Lyricist not known

  13. Hum Ne To Dard-E-Dil Ko Tamanna Bana Diya - Dard-E-Dil(1953) - Mohammed Rafi - Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri

Rai Chand along with Pankaj Mullick and Timir Baran shaped up the Hindi film music in its formative years. His biggest gift to the Hindi film industry was the introduction of playback singing and we all should be grateful to him for this.

Rai Chand Boral received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award - the highest award in Indian cinema, given by Government of India - in 1978 at the age of 75. Same year, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Creative and Experimental music category, the highest for performing artist conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.

From 1960 until his death in 1981, Rai Chand led a very quiet life mostly behind the curtains.

Let's remember this great composer and salute to his work.

I would like to present two of the Rai Chand Boral's gems to you. Hope you will enjoy and appreciate it.

1. Babul Moraa, Naihar Chhuto Hi Jaae - Street Singer(1938) - K.L.Saigal - Lyricist Arzoo Lucknowi

This is undoubtedly the greatest Bhairavi of the Hindi films produced so far. There is a tale from the time of English rule in India when Wajid Ali Shah - the princeling who was extremely fond of music and dance - was dethroned by the English rulers, he was devastated and wrote a poem Babul Mora to depict the state of his heart and mind. In the film, Saigal with a headband and harmonium in hands sung this song live while shooting the film. Saigal's low pitch voice represents the extreme sadness of the character.

2. Naa To Din Hi Din Wo Rahe Mere - Dard-E-Dil(1953) - Lata Mangeshkar - Lyricist D N Madhok

When I first heard about Rai Chand Boral, I thought he was the composer from 1930's and 40's and never ever imagined that he would have composed in 1950's with the singers that I knew like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale and Mohammad Rafi. To my pleasant surprise, he did compose an amazing song for Lata and she with her soulful voice has done full justice to this song.

Videos of both the above songs are placed just before the start of this English version. Please do watch and enjoy. Thanks.

====================================================================

Dear Friends,

India has a great variety of cultures, music, and languages, however often we are completely ignorant about it except that of our own native. This is unfortunately true even for the music that enriches our lives. However, music is so magical that it destroys all the boundaries such as castes, regions, religions, and even nations. The song that I have presented today will portray the same feelings of music being a common thread that binds all of us.

It was the year 1990 when the Superstar of Malayalam Cinema - Mohanlal - decided to form his own production company viz. "Pranavam Arts". He then goes on to produce the first movie "His Highness Abdullah" independently through his own banner. He approaches his long-time friends Sibi Malayil and Raveendran to respectively direct and compose music for his film. Raveendran composed 5 songs and wanted the legendary singer Yesudas to sing those. However, Yesudas had made up his mind not to sing for the films again and pursue singing Carnatic Classical only. When he hears that the song is going to be picturized on Mohanlal and he himself is the producer of the film, Yesudas agrees to sing it for him! This proved to be a historical moment for the Malayali film industry. "His Highness Abdullah" was hugely successful commercially in Kerala and Tamilnadu. It also won 4 national awards. All the songs of the film were super-duper hits. The trio of Kathapram+Raveendran+Yesudas went on to create memorable songs for a long time.

The story behind the song:

Maharaj Udayvarma (Nedumudi Venu) is the head of a very rich Royal family. Some of his relatives have been extremely greedy and hence want to kill Udayvarma to acquire all of his wealth. They hire a singer from Mumbai viz. Abdullah (Mohanlal). Abdullah disguises himself as Ananthan Namboodri and enters the palace citing the reason as studying the palace architecture. Maharaj Udayvarma does not like Abdullah but gives him permission to stay on for a couple of days. The day when Abdullah was about to go back, he sings the song "Pramadhavanam Veendum" and is successful in pleasing Maharaj Udayvarma. Thus, Abdullah, as Ananthan Namboodri continues to stay in the palace. What happens next? Does Maharaj Udayvarma get to know Ananthan's real face/name? Does Ananthan marry Radha? Are the relatives successful in killing Maharaj Udayvarma? To know all of this, you will have to watch this entertaining movie.

Highlights of the Song:

Raveendran has beautifully composed the song "Pramadhavanam Veendum" in Hindustani Raag viz. Jog. The song starts with a breathtaking Aalaap which lasts for about 39 seconds. Hearing this, Radha (Gauthami) is so happy that she eagerly runs to see who is singing it. That movement has been wonderfully captured through the playing of the violin, so much so that the speed of music matches that of Radha. Violin, Mrudangam, Flute, and Veena are the main instruments used primarily in the song to create an out-of-the-world effect.

What can I say about the legend himself! Yesudas has poured his soul into this song. His voice and tonal quality, his extraordinary rendering, his deep masculine voice (Kharj), his immense skill to traverse in all Saptaka, and finally his superb singing enhance the beauty of the composition. He has certainly taken this song to a different level. You feel like God has gifted you this song!

Music Composer Raveendran, in one of his interviews, has shared a couple of his experiences after the movie was released on 30th Sept 1990.

Raveendran was waiting for a bus on Kottayam Bus Stand. It was extremely crowded and hence no one was able to hear others. From nowhere, "Pramadhavanam Veendum" started playing on the loudspeaker. And gosh!! The entire bus stand went completely silent. One could even hear a drop of the pin at that time. Such was the magic of the composition and the great Yesudas. At that moment, Raveendran realized the greatness of Yesudas and what he (Yesudas) meant for the Malayalee people. Raveendran was so touched by the whole atmosphere that he was in tears and could not speak for a while.

Another incident happened when Raveendran was traveling to North India. While having lunch at a roadside Punjabi Dhaba, the Dhaba was playing the Punjabi Bhangra songs as usual. However, it suddenly played the "Pramadhavanam Veendum" song! After every 3-4 songs, the "Pramadhavanam Veendum" played, the sequence continued. Raveendran was extremely surprised and checked with the Sardarji owner of the Dhaba about playing a Malayali song. The Saradarji had a Malayali friend who was very close. He used to play this song very often, and thus Saradarji developed a liking towards this song. The Malayali friend was killed in an accident. Saradarji used to play this song in his remembrance. This moved Raveendran a lot and he realized that music has no boundaries.

Well, friends, I hope you take out time to listen to this God's gift. The video of the song along with its Lyrics is shared above just before the English version begins. Hope you will like it and enjoy the song. Thank you.
