Rai Chand Boral |
The Indian Film industry once again witnessed a historical change when Rai Chand Boral along with Pankaj Mullick successfully implemented the Playback singing in the Hindi films in 1935. The film was 'Dhoop Chhaon' produced by New Theatres and the song, "Main Khush Hona Chahoon", had an all women chorus led by Parul Ghosh with Suprabha Sarkar and Harimati picturized in a dance sequence.
For this reason, Rai Chand Boral (widely known as R. C. Boral) is considered to be the pioneer of the Playback music in Indian films. The legendary music composer of yesteryears Anil Biswas used to call R. C. Boral as the "Bhishma Pitamaha" of Indian film music.
Born on 19th Oct 1903, in an affluent and cultured family, Rai Chand's father Lal Chand Boral was a renowned Pakhawaj player and a classical singer. Thanks to his father, Rai Chand was fortunate to have some great tutors in the form of Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan (Classical Singer from Rampur Gharana), Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan (Sarod player) and Ustad Masit Khan (Tabla player). Having such Gurus, Rai Chand soon learned to play Tabla and Piano and started doing the Saath Sangat. He attended several music conferences held in Lucknow, Banaras and Allahabad.
At a very young age of 24, in 1927, Rai Chand joined the Indian Broadcasting Corporation's Calcutta station as its Head of Music Department. This was the time when cinema was also getting popular across India. BN Sircar, an England-returned civil engineer, too, was fascinated by cinema. He produced two silent films, 'Chasher Meye' and 'Chor Kanta', and approached Rai Chand to compose for these films. He conducted live orchestra from a pit dug in front of the screen and rose to fame as a musical wizard.

Nitin Bose directed film 'The President' was released in 1937. Rai Chand teamed up with Pankaj Mullick to compose songs for this film. Two of his compositions "Ek Raje Ka Beta Lekar" and "Ek Bangala Bane Nyaaraa" both sung by Saigal became super hits.
Rai Chand had greatest success of his career in 1937 with Debaki Bose directed film "Vidyapati" starring Prithviraj Kapur, Kanan Devi, Pahadi Sanyal and Leela Desai. Rai Chand composed total 15 songs for this film. Songs like "Doley Hirday Ki Naiyya" (Kanan Devi); "Gokul Se Gaye Girdhari" and "Panghat Pe Kanhiya Aata Hai" (both by K. C. Day), "Ambuva Ki Dali Dali Jhum Rahi Hai Aali" (Kanan Devi and Dhoomi Khan) among other compositions were precious pearls of Rai Chand's treasury. Surprising and notably, none of the 15 songs of this film were sung by Saigal!

In fact, it is said that Rai Chand played a major role in shaping up Kundan Lal Saigal's career as a singer in Hindi films.
"Lagan" released in 1941 was possibly last film Saigal had with Rai Chand. It also had some of the wonderful songs like "Kahe Ko Raad Machayi", "Ye Kaisa Anyay Daataa", "Hat Gayi Lo Kaali Ghata" and "Koi Manushya Kitna Hi Bura Kyon Na Ho" all by Saigal were also hits.

"Swami Vivekananda" from 1955 and "Nilachale Mahaprabhu" from 1957 were his last Hindi films, while "Natun Fasal" - a Bengali film from 1960 - was his last film as a Composer.
In his musical career of 28 years from 1932 to 1960, Rai Chand composed music for around 75 films (36 Hindi and 39 Bengali). The list of his songs that I could compile from various sources has 296 Hindi songs in it (this list is only indicative and not 100% accurate as information about many songs is not available on the internet).
Some of the interesting statistics regarding Rai Chand's compositions(career spanning 28 years from 1932 to 1960):
- Composed music for around 75 films (36 Hindi and 39 Bengali)
- 296 Hindi songs - out of which 47 songs were sung by Kundan Lal Saigal either as Solo or with others
- Between 1932 and 1939, Rai Chand composed 208 out of his 296 Hindi songs for 22 out of 36 Hindi films that he composed for, i.e. almost 70% of his work was done in just first 8 years!
- In the first year at Bombay in 1953 (and his second last year in the Hindi film industry), Rai Chand composed 23 songs for 2 films
- Lata Mangeshkar has sung total 8 songs under Rai Chand out of which 7 are solos

Rai Chand along with Pankaj Mullick and Timir Baran shaped up the Hindi film music in its formative years. His biggest gift to the Hindi film industry was the introduction of playback singing and we all should be grateful to him for this.
Rai Chand Boral received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award - the highest award in Indian cinema, given by Government of India - in 1978 at the age of 75. Same year, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Creative and Experimental music category, the highest for performing artist conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.
From 1960 until his death in 1981, Rai Chand led a very quiet life mostly behind the curtains.
Let's remember this great composer and salute to his work.
I would like to present two of the Rai Chand Boral's gems to you. Hope you will enjoy and appreciate it.
