Sajjad Hussain - The Inimitable Maestro - Part 1

Namaskaar Friends!

Once again, I am extremely happy to present some more musical pieces from the Golden Era of Hindi Film Music. This time I will be presenting few songs from one of my favorite music composers - Sajjad Hussain. Sajjad was the master of Mandolin, one of the most difficult instruments to play classical music. He was also known for his extremely complex and out of the world compositions for the Hindi films from 1950's and 1960's.

He was a real genius who enthralled the contemporary musicians and audience with his immicable Mandolin performances and Song compositions.

This blog has 2 parts - this is the first part which contains general information about Sajjad and 4 of his selected songs, while the second part contains an interesting stroy about my face-to-face meeting with Sajjad and 4 of his best songs.

You can read the second part at this link Sajjad Hussain - The Inimitable Maestro - Part 2.

English version of the blog is at the end of the Marathi version below.

The Legend

"Sajjad was the only original composer we ever had. All of us at some point have been inspired by something or other. But every note of Sajjad's is original" - संगीतकार अनिल विश्वास (Ref. "Yesterday's Melodies Today's Memories" by Manek Premchand)

"Sajjad Sahab was a misunderstood artist. He was simply a perfectionist. He loved Arabic music and would demonstrate how to sing. He disliked loud Alaap and taught me to sing in a feather-light, effortless manner. You know, there is little one can do with the Mandolin. But Sajjad Sahab performed Meend and Taan, which is surprising. He was so sharp that he could instantly tell when a musician hit a wrong note" - लता मंगेशकर (Ref. Times of India dated 15th June 2017)

Dilip Kumar and Shammi in Sangdil

2 Legends - Sajjad and Lata

Badnaam Mohabbat Kau Karen - Noorjehan - Dost (1944) - Lyrics Shams Lakhnavi

Gham-e-Aashiyana Satayega Kab Tak - Suraiyya - 1857 (1946) - Lyrics Mohan Singh

Loota Dil Mera Haaye Aabaad Hokar - Lata Mangeshkar - Hulchal (1951) - Lyricist Khumar Barabankwi

Khayalon Mein Tum Ho Nazaron Mein Tum Ho - Saiyan (1951) - Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri

Sajjad Hussain - The Inimitable Maestro - Part 2

Friends,

"Sajjad's songs are most difficult to sing; however it is also a great pleasure. Sajjad's nature may be contentious but he was a genuine artist" - Talat Mahmood (Ref. "Gaaye Chala Jaa" - Shirish Kanekar)

"Sajjad in his every song shows his genius, so much so that we musicians really appreciate him" - Music Composer Datta Korgaokar (K. Datta) (Ref. "Gaaye Chala Jaa" - Shirish Kanekar)

"I really admire Sajjad for the outstanding compositions he did" - O. P. Nayyar (Ref. "Gaaye Chala Jaa" - Shirish Kanekar)

"You get a composer like Sajjad once in your lifetime" - Noorjehan

"Sajjad was the only original composer we ever had. All of us at some point have been inspired by something or other. But every note of Sajjad's is original" - Music Composer Anil Biswas (Ref.

He was so sharp that he could instantly tell when a musician hit a wrong note" - Lata Mangeshkar (Ref. Times of India dated 15th June 2017)

These are only some of the reactions that one gets from contemporary legends about Sajjad Hussain which tell you how much he was respected for his exemplary musical skills, though he himself would not have demanded it. Sajjad Saab was superly talented and perhaps hence was extremely straight talker. He would not hesitate to call spade a spade. He never compromised on his principles, never tolerated any interference in his compositions from anyone else. The film industry in general does not like people who are upright and thus tends to devalue, ignore them. With this kind of personality, Sajjad's fate was written already, hence he could do only 14 Hindi films in his entire career which lasted for 33 years to be precise from 1944 to 1977 with many years in between went into oblivion.

In spite of this, Sajjad composed music for 105 songs in Hindi. He also composed music for a Sinhalese film and a Telugu film. Both were a super hit thanks to Sajjad's music.

Born on 15th June 1917 in a small village viz. Sitamau in Madhya Pradesh, Sajjad's father - Mohammad Amir Khan - decided to teach him to play Sitar at a very young age. He not only picked up Sitar well enough in no time, but in a few years, had learnt to play almost 16 differnt instruments like Flute, Piano, Veena, Claronet, Violin, Jaltarang, Tabla, Mandolin, Harmonium, Spanish and Hawaiian Guitar. Hence, he was called 'One Man Orchestra' and never needed any Assistant while composing music. However he was fascinated by Mandolin, hence his father built a small one on his own. Sajjad used to play that Mandolin for many years before a Jewish Mandolin player - Rahim Soloman - gifted him a professional Mandolin in Mumbai.

In 1937, Sajjad Saab came to Mumbai (then Bombay) to try his luck as a Music Composer in the Hindi film industry. Initially, he worked at Sohrab Modi's Minerva Movietone and Wadia Movietone. He started as Assistant Music Director for Meer Saheb and Rafiq Gaznavi, later started assisting Hanuman Prasad. Seeing Sajjad's skills, Hanuman Prasad gave him an opportunity to compose 2 songs for the film 'Gaali' in 1944. Same year, Sajjad got his first major break for the film "Dost" which was directed by Shaukat Husain Rizvi (husband of Noorjehan - the Superstar Singer cum Actor of that time). "Dost" had 5 songs of Noorjehan of which "Koi Prem Ka Deke Sandesa" and "Badnam Mohabbat Kaun Karen" became popular. The movie became super hit due to its music; however Shaukat Rizvi gave all the credit to Noorjehan's gaayki. This angered Sajjad and he vowed not t work again with Noorjehan, and he literally did not. As a result, people were deprived of classics from Noorjehan and Sajjad.

Come 1946, Sajjad composed music for the film '1857' which was based on India's 1st War of Independence. In this film, Suraiyya and Shamshad Begum - who had already become singing starts - sung for Sajjad for the first time. All the songs proved to be a hit, in particular Suaiyya's "Ummedon ka Tara", "Phir Ho Gayee Unse Baat" and "Gham-e-Aashiyana Satayega Kab Tak". A duet by Surendra and Suraiyya "Teri Nazar Mein Main Rahoon" is remembered even today.

1950, 1951 and 1952 turned out to be Sajjad's most successful years as he not only composed some of his best songs for 5 films but stamped his authority and genius as a Composer who creates 'out-of-the-world' tunes. "Khel" and "Magroor" in 1950, "Hulchal" and "Saiyan" in 1951 and "Sangdil" in 1952 were the movies in which Sajjad enthralled the audience with his beautiful compositions.

Dilip Kumar-Shammi : Sangdil
The song "Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat Yeh Chandani" sung by Talat is an Evergreen song till date and is played on all channels quite regularly. The song required 17 retakes from Talat for Sajjad to finalize it. It created so much buzz in the whole Film industry that a great composer like Madan Mohan could not resist himself from copying this song for one of his songs "Tuze Kya Sunau Main Dilruba" from the fim "Aakhri Daao". Hearing this, Sajjad said "
अब मेरे गाने तो क्या उसकी परछाइयाँ भी चलने लगी है" meaning "Nowadays even a shadow of my song becomes popular" while Madan Mohan admitted that he did not think of any other composer than Sajjad to copy a tune.

In 1955, Sajjad worked with Asha Bhosale, Mubarak Begum and Kishore Kumar for the first time for the film "Rukhsana". Songs like "Tumhe Hum Yaad Karte Hain" (Asha), "Dard Bhari Kisi Ki Yaad" (Asha) and "Tere Jahan Se Chal Diye" (Kishore-Asha) are worth listening.

After "Rukhsana", Sajjad did not get any work for 8 years, primarily due to his attitude, arrogance and straight talk which was not liked by many in the Industry. Thus, many producers and directors turned their back on Sajjad.

Cut to 1963, Producer F. C. Ramsay and Director Vishram Bedekar were working on a movie viz. "Rustam Sohrab" which was based on a Persian poem. Hence, they were looking for a Music Composer who had knowledge of Persian/Arabic music. They could not find anybody better and fitter than Sajjad.
And Sajjad did not disappoint. Even after the gap of 8 years, Sajjad's genius was such that he could produce 5 wonderful compositions and all songs (as was rudimentary for a Sajjad film) were super duper hit.

Lata Mangeshkar sang for Sajjad for the first time in "Khel" in 1950. Together they have given ony 14 songs, but each one is a Gem. Both Lata and Sajjad had huge respect for each other. One would have hardly heard Sajjad praising any singer apart from Lata and Noorjehan. In the following video, please watch Sajjad talking about Lata - this is an extremely rare video and perhaps the only video of Sajjad where he is speaking live.

Here is a list of Lata's songs for Sajjad. Please spare some time and watch each one of them carefully to understand the sheer value of these gems.

Sajjad used to say "सिर्फ लता और नूरजहाँ गाती है, बाकी सब रोती है" meaning only Lata and Noorjehan sing well, everyone else only cry. However, if you go through the following list of songs sung by singers other than Lata and Noorjehan, you will be surprised!

After the grand success of "Rustam Sohrab" in 1963, Sajjad once again went into oblivion for 10 years. In 1973 when he returned with "Mera Shikar" and "Aakhri Sajda" in 1977, he was merely a shadow of himself! 😢 These turned out to be his last films. From 1977 until his death on 21st July 1995, Sajjad lived a lonely life, far away from the glamour of the Film industry. No one remembered him. Well known composer Khayyam and singer Pankaj Udhas were the only ones to attend his funeral.

Sajjad had five sons viz. Mustafa, Noor, Nasir, Yusuf and Abdul. All play Mandolin. Mustafa, Noor and Nasir are Top Grade artists and accompany many well known artists on Mandolin.

Today, I am going to present 8 of Sajjad's songs - 4 in this part and 4 in the next one.

1) Badnaam Mohabbat Kau Karen - Noorjehan - Dost (1944) - Lyrics Shams Lakhnavi

"Dost" was Sajjad's first movie as an independent Music Director. And he had a Superstar in the form of Noorjehan in front of him; but Sajjad did not deter and composed such fine songs that Noorjehan terms this particular song as one of best songs. Listen to the coaxing nature of the word "Badnaam" and very effective pause after that.

2) Gham-e-Aashiyana Satayega Kab Tak - Suraiyya - 1857 (1946) - Lyrics Mohan Singh

1857 was the biggest commercially successful movie in 1946 and major credit went to Sajjad's compositions. In this song, you will find the young Suraiyya expressing her worries. The last stranza is composed in higher pitch than the earlier ones, reminding us of the legendary composer Sudhir Phadke who had similar style of composing last stranzas in higher pitch.

3) Loota Dil Mera Haaye Aabaad Hokar - Lata Mangeshkar - Hulchal (1951) - Lyricist Khumar Barabankwi

Sajjad composed only 3 songs for the film and let it due to non payment by Producers. The unique point about this song is its prelude where Lata sings without any background music and excellent use of Violin. The high point of the song is the first line of the second stranza which is very different than the first lines of other stranzas.

4) Khayalon Mein Tum Ho Nazaron Mein Tum Ho - Saiyan (1951) - Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri

This is an unbelievable Dream song from orchestration point of view. Sajjad, for a change, has composed this song to portray the happy mood. The background music before the song begins is extremely pleasing. The film features Ajit (famous for his villian roles) in the lead male role, while the ever beautiful Madhubala plays the lead female role. Sajjan (Betal from famous TV Serial Vikram Aur Betal) plays the supporting actor role. The entire picturisation of this song enhances its beauty.

Friends,

Namaste! I am very happy and excited to present to you my blog on Hindi Film industry's Superstar of yesteryears - Waheeda Rehman.

As always, the English version of the blog follows the Marathi version below.

S. D. Burman - The Prince-Musician by Anirudha Bhattacharjee and Balaji Vittal)

With Husband Shashi Rekhi in "Shagoon"

1938 - A small village viz. Chengalpattu, 23 km. from Chennai (then Madras), sees a young girl born into a traditional middle class Muslim family. She is the fourth girl in the family. If social beliefs in those days were to be believed, the parents would have been shocked and sad to see yet another girl born, but Mohammad Abdur Rehman and his wife Mumtaz Begum proved to be different from the lot. Because, not only did they name the young born as 'Waheeda' meaning Beautiful, Trustworthy, Reliable, etc., but also sent all the 4 girls for Bharatnatyam training in Chennai when they grew up a bit.

Waheeda did her schooling at Visakhapattanam since her father was transferred there as a norm of his Government job as a District Commissioner. In 1951, Mohammad Rehman's sudden death forced Waheeda to give up her dreams of becoming a Doctor and turn to Dance performances to earn money for living.

Cut to 1954 - Telugu Films Director - Tapi Chanakya - once saw Waheeda's dance performance and offered her a small role of a Dancer in a song in the film "Rojulu Marayi" in 1955. Not only Waheeda's dance and the song "Eruvaka Sagaroranno Chinnanna" became hit bu the film also was a Superhit. The song was remade in Tamil with Waheeda featuring once again as a Dancer.

The above song was based on a Folk song in Telegu - Click here to listen.

Are you reminded of a famous Hindi song after listening to the above song? Click here to watch it!

As a result of success of the above song, Waheeda got an opportunity to act in 3 Tamil films thereafter viz. Jayasimha (1955) with N. T. Ramarao, Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956) and first colour film in Tamil viz. Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum (1956).

With Guru and Geeta Dutt
The same year i.e. 1956, the Hindi Films Director - Guru Dutt - had watched "Rojulu Marayi" and had particullarly liked the song featuring Waheeda. So, in the grand celebration party for the film's success, when Guru Dutt was introduced to Waheeda, he asked if she would come to Mumbai (then Bombay) to act in his upcoming film "C. I. D.". Waheeda agreed and came to Mumbai where she was introduced to the Director of the film Raj Khosla. As per the tradition in those days, Raj Khosla suggested Waheeda to adopt an attractive screen name for herself, but she refused profoundly. She said she is even ready to sacrifice her film career instead of hiding her real name.

This shows the real strong character of Waheeda. In her entire film career, she stuck to her principles and never compromised on those. E.g. No change of name, No Swim Suit, No Sleeveless, etc.

The film "C.I.D." opened the doors of success for Waheeda and she ruled the Hindi Film Industry for next 17 years i.e. until 1973. Her craze in those days was such that the famour writer from Marathi viz. Vasant Purushottam Kale had written an entire Katha (type of writings) that had Waheeda's name in its title!

Waheeda contrinued to work with Guru Dutt. "Pyasa" released in 1957 and "Kagaz Ke Phool" released in 1959 turned out to be milestones not only for Waheeda's career, but also for the Hindi Film Industry. Till date, these two movies are regarded as Classics! People liked and admired the pair of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. They were featured together in 3 more movies viz. "12 O' Clock" (1958), "Chaudahvi Ka Chand" (1960) and "Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam" (1962).

Like Guru Dutt-Waheeda, the other pairs that were hit with the audience in those days were Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dev Anand-Suraiyya and Dilip Kumar-Madhubala; however it's a sad irony that they could not transform their on-screen pairing in real life!

Waheeda has acted in around 90 films in a career spanning 65 years from 1955 to 2020. In this journey, she had played the Lead Female role against 2 generations of the Male actors - from Guru Dutt to Rajesh Khanna. Following list is self-explanatory:

Waheeda played different kinds of roles in her career. Be it a Glamorous Kamini of "C.I.D." or a good-hearted prostitute Gulabo in "Pyasa" or Shanti from "Kagaz Ke Phool" who experiences a journey from being a commoner to a Superstar or Bani in "12 O' Clock" who is alleged to have murdered her own sister or Rosie from "Guide" who breaks all the norms of a married life to experience the joy of living or Heerabai a danceuse from "Teesri Kasam" or a dedicated Nurse from "Khamoshi". If you watch all these films, you will get amazed by the sheer variety of acting that Waheeda has produced.

Waheeda was known for her beautiful face, however her Grace and Dignity empowered her beauty and the acting skills. She is perhaps the only actor in the Hindi Film Industry whose beauty has been appreciated by many lyricists in their own styles. Here are few examples:
However, the most appropriate description of Waheeda's beauty has been penned by Shakeel Badayuni in "Chaudahvi Ka Chand" (1960). You wonder how the poet has realized your own feelings about Waheeda! Here is the lyric of  the song. (Courtesy: https://www.lyricsindia.net/)

Approximately 180 songs have been picturized either on Waheeda or here presence is ther in the song. You will be surprised to know the following facts:
Lot of the credit of Waheeda's success would go to her Calm and Composed nature, her disciplined life, her punctuality, her tolerant nature and her readiness to work for long hours to the satisfaction of her Director.

The film "Guide" published in 1965 awarded the maximum success to Waheeda. Not only the film was superhit in India and abroad, but it also gave Waheeda her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. It was the peak of her career. The story behind the making of 'Guide" goes something like this:

It's producer Dev Anand wanted to produce the film in 2 languages - English and Hindi simultaneously. He finalized Tad Danielewski of Stratton Productions in US to direct the English version. And for Hindi there was a tussle between Raj Khosla and Chetan Anand. Tad wanted an English speaking actor to play the Lead Female role - Rosie - in "Guide"; thus he had Leela Naidu in his mind; however Dev Anand rejected it. Dev suggested Vaijayantimala and Tad rejected her stating she is too fat for American audience to accept her in the lead role. So it then boiled down to Waheeda playimg Rosie, thanks to her dancing skills. And so we all got to see a memorable movie and performance which is very fondly remembered even today! "Guide" was the only entry to Oscars from India that year.

After success of "Guide", Waheeda saw more sucess in the coming years. Her film "Neelkamal" in 1968 gave her her second Filmfare Award as Best Actress. She won the accolades at National level for her performance in "Reshma Aur Shera" in 1971.

The last movie in which Waheeda played the Lead role was "Phagun" in 1973 with Dharmendra. After this, she started accepting Character roles in the films and continued her journey for a long time. Her fans still remember her character roles from the films like "Kabhie Kabhie", "Namak Halal", "Namkeen", "Chandni" and "Lamhe".

Meanwhile, in 1974, Waheeda secretly married Kamaljeet aka Shashi Rekhi who was her Male Lead in the film "Shagoon" in 1964. Both led a happily married life in Bengaluru until Kamaljeet died in 2000, post which Waheeda along with her son Sohail and daughter Kashvi moved to Mumbai and has been leading a peaceful yet fulfilling life.

Kudos to Waheeda Rehman - an actor - who gave us immense happiness and enriched our lives through her wonderful performances.
