(Classical based song from Salil Chowdhury)

#MarathiVersion

“Jaa Tose Nahin Boloon Kanhaiya” — Radha’s Playful Complaint to Krishna

Film: Parivaar (1956) | Lyricist: Shailendra | Music Composer: Salil Chowdhury | Singers: Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey

Today’s song and the film it belongs to are unique in several ways.

  1. The song features the relatively unfamiliar Bengali actors Sabita Chatterjee and Asim Kumar.

  2. The film was produced by the renowned director Bimal Roy.

  3. It was directed by the celebrated comedian Asit Sen.

  4. Kishore Kumar appears as a guest artist, and his role is restricted to just one song!

  5. This is one of the very few songs that begin with the rhythmic syllables of the tabla.

Parivar, released in 1956, is a family drama. In those days, the joint-family system was prevalent. The family portrayed in this film consists of five brothers: the eldest, Mahesh Chandra, who is retired; Ramesh, a lawyer (Jayraj); Ganesh, an engineer (Anwar); Dinesh, a doctor (Sajjan Kumar); and Suresh, a music composer (Asim Kumar). Together with their wives and children, they form a large household of around fifteen to twenty members. Everyone lives together harmoniously until, one day, a simple cup of milk triggers a veritable Mahabharata within the family!

The film has a total of five songs:

  1. Ja Tose Nahin Boloon Kanhaiya — Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey

  2. Jhir Jhir Jhir Jhir Badarwa Barse O Kaari Kaari — Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar

  3. Kuwein Mein Kood Ke Mar Jaana — Kishore Kumar

  4. Bawali Bana Ke Chhoda — Asha Bhosle

  5. Ek Do Teen, Sabse Pehle Tandurusti — Asha Bhosle and Hemant Kumar

Interestingly, barring Kuwein Mein Kood Ke Mar Jaana, which is picturised on Kishore Kumar and sung by him, all the other songs feature the same pair, Sabita Chatterjee and Asim Kumar. Although Kishore Kumar’s role in the film is confined to that one song, his remarkable performance and singing in it are truly worth watching. But let us return to our song.

Today’s selection is based on Raag Hansadhwani, a raag that travelled from Carnatic music into the Hindustani classical tradition. According to Wikipedia, the raag was created by Ramaswami Dikshitar in 1790. His son, the celebrated South Indian composer and lyricist Muthuswami Dikshitar, composed the famous devotional composition Vatapi Ganapatim Bhajeham in this raga. The composition enjoys immense popularity in South India and among lovers of Carnatic music.

Listen to Vatapi Ganapatim Bhajeham, rendered by the renowned vocalist Dr K. J. Yesudas. It is simply magnificent!

The same melodic framework was also used by Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar for his composition Daata Tu Ganapati Gajanan.

Salil Chowdhury, too, drew upon this very melody to compose today’s song, Jaa Tose Nahin Boloon Kanhaiya.

One of the most distinctive features of this song is its opening. It begins with the rhythmic syllables of the tabla, followed by a beautiful alaap by Lata Mangeshkar. Using just five instruments—ghungroos, tabla, mridang, flute and sitar—Salil Da displays his extraordinary musical ingenuity. Except for the first line of the mukhda, he gives the rest of the song an entirely different melodic treatment.

When singers such as Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar, both deeply rooted in classical music, come together to perform a composition of this kind, the result is an extraordinary musical experience. Listening to Ja Tose Nahin Boloon Kanhaiya makes this abundantly clear.

The alaaps by Lata and Manna Dey are exquisite. Particularly captivating are the various vocal embellishments and alaaps following the word “Jaa”—passages one could listen to again and again. The alaap after “Roothi Radhike,” the mridang interlude following “Maanat Nahin Radha,” and the nimble vocal flourishes Lata brings to “Jaa Jaa Jaa Jaa” are all delightfully melodious.

Towards the end, following “Maan Gayi Radha,” the composition gathers pace. Lata’s voice matches the increased tempo with effortless agility and astonishing ease, leaving us spellbound. The seamless interplay between the dancer’s rhythmic footwork and the tabla is so flawless that one cannot help exclaiming, “Wah! Wah!”

So, let us sit back and savour this unusual and truly marvellous musical gem!
