अनमोल रतन - 11 : Gifted Musician - "Lara Lappa" Vinod

I am very happy to present a new song, rather 2 songs, in the series Anmol Ratan. This time it's from one of the gifted musicians of the '50s viz. Eric Roberts aka Vinod. Nobody knows a great deal about Vinod or his work in Hindi films as a Music Composer; but people still remember a very famous song viz. "Lara Lappa Lara Lappa Laai Rakada". It was Vinod who had composed this magical number for a 1949 film "Ek Thi Ladaki". Till date, this song is a hit and often played on Radio.

In this blog, I am going to talk about Vinod and his compositions. Hope you will like it.

विनोद. हे कुणा संगीतकाराचे नाव असेल असे वाटते का? नाही ना? पण आहे!

"एक दो तीन", "ऊट पटांग", "हा हा हे हे हो हो", "मक्खी चूस" "शेख चिल्ली" ही कुठल्या तरी हिंदी चित्रपटाची नावे वाटतात का? नाही ना? आणि चुकून जरी यावर विश्वास बसला तरी या विचित्र नावांच्या चित्रपटांमध्ये संगीत असेल असं वाटतं का? नाही ना? पण आहे!

आशा भोसले यांनी OP नय्यर आणि RD बर्मन यांच्या व्यतिरिक्त आणखी कोणा संगीतकाराकडे लता मंगेशकर यांच्यापेक्षा जास्त गाणी गायली असतील असं वाटतं का? नाही ना? पण आहेत!

वरील सर्व अशक्यप्राय वाटणाऱ्या गोष्टी संगीतकार विनोद यांच्याबाबतीत खऱ्या ठरल्या आहेत! 😊

स्वातंत्र्यापूर्वीचा काळ होता तो, साल १९४० ते १९४४, तत्कालीन भारतातील (आताच्या पाकिस्तानातील) लाहोरमध्ये वास्तव्य असलेले अनेक संगीतकार मुंबईच्या वाटेवर होते. मुंबईत बनणाऱ्या हिंदी चित्रपटात आपल्याला जास्त संधी मिळतील या विचाराने बहुदा लाहोर सोडून त्यांनी मुंबईची निवड केली असावी. यात मास्टर गुलाम हैदर होते, शामसुंदर होते, रशीद अत्रे, फिरोझ निझामी, हुस्नलाल-भगतराम, हंसराज बहल यांसारखे ज्येष्ठ आणि श्रेष्ठ संगीतकार होते. पं. अमरनाथ आणि पं. गोविंदराम हे दोघेच काय ते लाहोरमध्ये ठाण मांडून बसले होते. 

अशा या लाहोरमध्ये २८ मे १९२२ रोजी एरिक रॉबर्ट्स उर्फ विनोद याचा जन्म एका ख्रिस्ती कुटुंबात झाला. लहानपणी विनोदला लग्नाच्या वरातीच्या बॅण्डमध्ये वाजवल्या जाणाऱ्या संगीताचे खूप आकर्षण होते. तसेच गुरुद्वारांमधून गायले जाणारे रबाबी संगीतातील शबद कीर्तनही आवडायचे. त्याची संगीताची आवड पुढे त्याला पंडित अमरनाथांकडे घेऊन गेली आणि तो त्यांचा शिष्य बनला. पंडितजींकडून विनोदने रागशास्त्राचे ज्ञान मिळवले, त्याचबरोबर ते गाण्याला संगीत कसे देतात, हेही शिकून घेतले.

पुढे १९४५ मध्ये पं. अमरनाथ यांचे आकस्मिक निधन झाले; त्यावेळी अवघ्या २३ वर्षाच्या विनोदवर त्यांचे अपूर्ण चित्रपट पूर्ण करण्याची जबाबदारी येऊन पडली. "खामोश निगाहें", "पराये बस में" आणि "कामिनी" हे ते चित्रपट होत. विनोदनी या ३ चित्रपटात एकूण २० गाण्यांना संगीतबद्ध  केले; पण त्यांच्या दुर्दैवाने एकही चित्रपट चालला नाही.

सन १९४७ - विनोद आपल्या कुटुंबासह (पत्नी - शीला बेट्टी, मुली - वीणा आणि वीरा) लाहोर सोडून अमृतसर आणि तिथून थेट मुंबईला आले. आणि त्यांची संगीतकार म्हणून कारकीर्द पुन्हा एकदा नव्याने सुरु झाली ती "चमन" या १९४८ साली प्रदर्शित झालेल्या पंजाबी चित्रपटाने. याच वेळेस मास्टर गुलाम हैदर यांनी विनोद यांची गाठ लता मंगेशकर यांच्याशी घालून दिली. लताजींनी गुलाम हैदर यांच्या "मजबूर" या १९४८ साली प्रदर्शित झालेल्या चित्रपटात "बेदर्द तेरे दर्द को" हे गाणे गाऊन त्यांना प्रभावित केले होते. "चमन" मध्ये विनोद यांनी लताकडून २ गाणी गाऊन घेतली आणि दोन्ही गाणी प्रचंड गाजली. "राहे राहे जांडेया अँखियाँ मिलान्देया" आणि "गलियाँ च फिरदे ढोला, निके निके बाल वे" ही ती गाणी होत. जरूर बघा/ऐका. खाली लिंक्स दिल्या आहेत. विनोद-लता या जोडीकडून भविष्यात घडणाऱ्या काही अजरामर गीतांची नांदीच होती ही गीते जणू!

१९४० ते १९६० ही हिंदी चित्रसृष्टीची सोनेरी वर्षे होती असे मी मानतो. एक से एक चित्रपट आणि संगीतकार या काळात एकाच वेळेस आपली कला लोकांसमोर आणत होते. विनोद मुंबईत १९४७ साली त्यांची कारकीर्द सुरु करत असताना येथे त्यांचे समकालीन अनेक श्रेष्ठ संगीतकार राज्य करत होते. ही यादीच बघा म्हणजे तुम्हाला विनोद यांच्यासारख्या नवख्या संगीतकारासमोर असलेल्या आव्हानाची कल्पना येईल.

नौशाद ("अनमोल घडी" आणि "शाहजहान" - १९४६), पं. रविशंकर ("धरती के लाल" आणि "नीचा नगर" - १९४६),  हंसराज बहल ("फुलवारी" - १९४६), S. D. बर्मन (शिकारी - १९४६), सी. रामचंद्र ("शहनाई" - १९४७), अनिल विश्वास (अनोखा प्यार, गजरे  - १९४८), दत्ता डावजेकर (अदालत - १९४८), शंकर-जयकिशन (बरसात - १९४८), गुलाम हैदर (मजबूर, पद्मिनी - १९४८), हुस्नलाल भगतराम (प्यार की जीत - १९४८)

१९४९ साल उजाडले. निर्माते-दिग्दर्शक रूप शोरी "एक थी लडकी" नावाचा चित्रपट बनवत होते; आणि संगीतकार होते त्यांचे लाडके विनोद. या चित्रपटात एकूण १० गाणी विनोदनी दिली. त्यातील "लारा लप्पा लारा लप्पा लायी रकदा" हे गाणे तुफान गाजले, इतके की विनोद यांची ही Signature Tune बनली. आजतागायत हे गाणे रेडिओवर ऐकू येते. याशिवाय लता-मोहम्मद रफी यांचे द्वंद्वगीत "अब हाल-ए-दिल या हाल-ए-जिगर कुछ ना पुछीये" हे गाणेही लोकप्रिय झाले.

१९५० साली आलेले "अनमोल रतन" आणि "वफा" हे २ चित्रपट विनोद यांच्या कारकिर्दीतील सोनेरी कळस म्हणावे लागतील. लताची ३ गाणी - "तारे वोही है चांद वोही है" (अनमोल रतन), "अपनी अपनी किस्मत है" आणि "कागा रे जा रे जा रे" (वफा) ही तिच्या सर्वोत्कृष्ट २५ गाण्यांमध्ये नक्की समाविष्ट करावी लागतील. तलत-लताचे "शिकवा तेरा मैं गाऊं" हे युगलगीत, तर तलतचे "जब किसीके रुख़ पे ज़ुल्फ़ें आ के लहराने लगी" हे "अनमोल रतन" मधील गाणे आजही तलतच्या सर्वोत्तम गाण्यांपैकी मानली जातात.

१९४६ ते १९५९ या अवघ्या तेरा वर्षांच्या आपल्या कारकिर्दीत विनोदनी एकूण २७ हिंदी आणि ५ पंजाबी चित्रपटांना संगीत दिले, त्यांच्या हिंदी व पंजाबी गाण्यांची संख्या २२५ च्या आसपास आहे. यातील साधारण ८० म्हणजे ३५% गाणी विनोदनी १९४९ ते १९५१ या तीन वर्षात संगीतबद्ध केली होती! आश्चर्याची गोष्ट अशी की आशा भोसले यांनी विनोद यांच्याकडे तब्बल ४७ सोलो आणि सहकलाकारांबरोबर ३० अशी एकूण ७७ गाणी गायली आहेत, तर लता मंगेशकर यांनी फक्त १३ सोलो आणि सहकलाकारांबरोबर ९ अशी एकूण २२ हिंदी गाणी गायली आहेत!

विनोद यांची ११ सर्वोत्तम हिंदी गाण्यांची यादी खाली देत आहे, ही गाणी निवडताना वेगवेगळे गायक असतील हे पाहिले आहे. विनोद यांच्या बऱ्याच चित्रपटांच्या व्हिडिओ फिल्म्स आज उपलब्ध नाहीत, त्यामुळे खाली दिलेली बरीचशी गाणी ही फक्त Audio स्वरूपातच आहेत. तरी पण आपण ती जरूर ऐकावीत/पाहावीत. "अनमोल रतन" आणि "वफा" या चित्रपटात दिलेल्या अप्रतिम गाण्यांनंतर विनोद यांनी "मुखडा", "सब्ज बाग", "तितली" (१९५१), "लाडला", "ऊट पटांग", "रमण" (१९५४), "जलवा" (१९५५), "गरमा गरम" (१९५७), "अमर शहीद" (१९५९) इ. चित्रपटांना संगीत दिले. पण त्यातील मोजकीच गाणी वरील गाण्यांची उंची गाठू शकली. विनोद यांचे पहिले प्रेम पंजाबी चित्रपट  होते; पण पंजाबी चित्रपटसृष्टी रसातळाला गेली, त्याचबरोबर त्यांनी संगीत दिलेले हिंदी चित्रपट दुर्दैवाने बॉक्स ऑफिसवर तितकेसे चालले नाहीत. त्यामुळे विनोदना एक प्रकारचे नैराश्य आले, त्याचा परिणाम त्यांच्या तब्येतीवर झाला आणि अखेरीस २५ डिसेंबर १९५९ रोजी वयाच्या अवघ्या ३७व्या वर्षी ते आपल्याला सोडून गेले. नावात जरी "विनोद" असला तरी विनोद यांच्या संगीतरचना गंभीरपणे घ्यायला लागतात. दुर्दैवाने संगीतकार म्हणून त्यांच्या कारकिर्दीचे सार त्यांच्याच एका गाण्यातील ओळींमध्ये सामावलेले आहे:

अपनी अपनी किस्मत है, आबाद कोई बरबाद कोई।।  

अशा या गुणी संगीतकाराला मानाचा मुजरा.  

आज विनोद यांची हिंदीतली २ अजरामर गीते सादर करीत आहे.

१) लारा लप्पा लारा लप्पा लायी रकदा

१९४९ सालच्या "एक थी लडकी" या चित्रपटातील हे गीत. गायले आहे लता मंगेशकर आणि जी. एम. दुर्राणी यांनी. कोरस मध्ये मोहम्मद रफी यांचा आवाज ऐकू येतो. ह्या गाण्याची चाल "जुत्ती मेरी जांदी ए पहाडिये दे नाल" या पंजाबी लोकगीतावरून घेतली आहे. मीना शोरी नायिकेच्या भूमिकेत तर मोतीलाल ("ज़िन्दगी ख्वाब है" गाणे ज्याच्यावर चित्रित झाले आहे तो अभिनेता) नायकाच्या भूमिकेत आहे. गाण्याची पार्श्वभूमी एका ऑफिसमध्ये आहे. गाण्याचे शब्द मजेशीर आहेत. गीत लिहिले आहे अज़ीज़ काश्मीरी यांनी.

२) कागा रे जा रे जा रे 

१९५० साली आलेल्या "वफा" या निम्मी आणि करण दिवाण अभिनीत चित्रपटातील हे अप्रतिम गाणे. जितकी सुंदर चाल तितकेच सुंदर शब्द आहेत अज़ीज़ काश्मीरी यांचे. कट्टर पंजाबी असलेल्या विनोदनी आपला पारंपरिक ठेका सोडून इतकी दर्दभरी रचना करावी यातच त्यांचे कौशल्य दिसून येते. अतिशय सुंदर अशा व्हायोलिन किंवा सारंगीच्या तुकड्याने गाण्याची सुरुवात होते. "कागा रे" या शब्दाच्या आधी २ सेकंदच सतार वाजते, पण त्यामुळे गाण्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेले करुण वातावरण निर्माण होते, या इथे सतारीची योजना करण्याची कल्पना एखाद्या कसदार कलावंतालाच सुचू शकते. मुखड्यातील "जा रे जा रे" संपताना लगेचच पुढची ओळ सुरु होते आणि मग "संदेसवा" या शब्दानंतर येणारी स्वरांची जी उतरण विनोदनी बांधलीये आणि लताबाईंनी गायली आहे ती केवळ लाजवाब!

या गाण्याबद्दलचा एक किस्सा विनोद यांची मुलगी वीरा मिस्त्री यांनी सांगितला आहे - इथे बघा.

वीरा मिस्त्री यांची गाठ एके दिवशी बांद्र्याच्या डॉ. कपूर यांच्या दवाखान्यात आशा भोसले यांच्याशी पडली. आशाजींना जेंव्हा वीराजी कोण आहेत हे कळले त्यावेळी त्यांनी तिथल्या तिथे वीराजींना "कागा रे जा रे" हे गाणे म्हणून दाखवले. एका कलावंताने दुसऱ्या कलावंताला दिलेली मानवंदनाच होती ती! 

दुर्दैवाने "वफा" चित्रपट किंवा त्यातील एकही गाण्याचे व्हिडीओ आज उपलब्ध नाहीत, त्यामुळे खालील व्हिडिओ मध्ये आपल्याला फक्त गाणे ऐकू येईल.

Vinod! In literal English, this means a "Joke" or "Humor"! Can you believe that anyone with his name as Vinod would be a Music Composer?

Can you also believe that "Oot Pataang", "Ek Do Teen", "Ha Ha He He Ho Ho", "Sheikh Chilli", "Makkhi Choos" would be the names of Hindi movies?

Can you believe that apart from the greats O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman, Asha Bhosale would have sung more songs with a composer than Lata Mangeshkar?

Alas! But all these facts which seem unbelievable are true, concidentally, in case of a gifted Music Composer of 1950's - Vinod! :-)

It was an era before India's independence, probably between 1940 and 1944. Many Music Composers who were based in Lahore (at that time it was in India), had decided to move to Bombay (now Mumbai) to strengthen their career in the Hindi film industry which was primarily being operated from Bombay. There were some great names like Master Ghulam Haider, Shyamsunder, Rasheed Atre, Firoze Nizami, Husnalal Bhagatram, Hansraj Behl, etc. who had moved to Bombay. Only Pt. Amarnath and Pt. Govindram had opted to continue to be in Lahore. 

Eric Roberts aka Vinod was born on 28th May 1922 in Lahore in a converted Christian family. From childhood days, Vinod was fascinated by the music that used to be played in the Wedding processions in Lahore along with the Shabad Keertan (Rababi music) that used to be recited in Gurudwaras. Vinod became a disciple of Pt. Amaranath and learnt the Raag Shastra and art of music composing from his Guru. 

In 1945, due to sudden demise of Pt. Amaranath, the young 23-yr old Vinod was asked to complete the music for 3 of his pending films viz. "Khamosh Nigahein", "Paraye Bas Mein" and "Kamini". He composed around 20 songs in these 3 films, but unfortunately none of the 3 films worked at the box office. As a result, Vinod's name was not recognized by the Hindi film industry.

However, Vinod continued to pursue his music and in 1947, shifted to Bombay, along with his wife Sheela Betty and two daughters viz. Veena and Veera, to explore opportunities in the Hindi film industry there. Strangely, he got his first opportunity in 1948 to compose music for a Punjabi film "Chaman". He happened to know Master Ghulam Haider from his days in Lahore. Master ji - as Ghulam Haider was fondly called - had introduced Lata Mangeshkar to the Hindi film industry through his film "Mazboor" published in 1948. Lata had sung an outstanding number "Bedard Tere Dard Ko Seene Se Lagaa Ke" in "Mazboor" and her young, fresh, sharp voice had moved everyone. Master ji introduced Vinod to Lata and he gave Lata 2 songs in his film "Chaman" viz. "Raahe Raahe Jandeyaa, Ankhiyan Milande Yaa" and "Galiyan Ch Firde Dhola, Neeke Neeke Baal Ve", both songs became big hits. Thus began a musical partnership which lasted for next 7-8 years and gave us some breathtaking songs.

It was not any easy job to come to Mumbai as a new face and establish yourself as a Music Composer. Just look at the list of Music Composers at that time who were ruling the Hindi film industry - Naushad ("Anmol Ghadi" and "Shahjehan" - 1946), Pt. Ravishankar ("Dharti Ke Laal" and "Neecha Nagar" - 1946), Hansraj Behl ("Phulwari" - 1946), S. D. Burman ("Shikari" - 1946), C. Ramchandra ("Shehnai" - 1947), Anil Biswas ("Anokha Pyaar", "Gajare" - 1948), Daata Davjekar ("Adalat" - 1948), Shankar-Jaikishan ("Barsaat" - 1948), Master Ghulam Haider ("Mazboor", "Padmini" - 1948) and Husnalal Bhagatram ("Pyaar Ki Jeet" - 1948). You can understand the huge challenge before Vinod to perform amidst his contemporaries.

Come 1949, Producer-Director Roop K. Shorey decided to produce a film viz. "Ek Thi Ladki", and chose Vinod to be its Music Composer. This was a golden opportunity for Vinod to prove his worth and he did not disappoint. He composed 10 songs for this film and few were a hit. The song "Lara Lappa Lara Lappa" became so popular that it not only became talk of the town but gave Vinod the much-needed and much-deserved recognition as a serious composer. "Lara Lappa" became Vinod's signature tune, and he is still remembered for this one song! Another song from this film that became popular was Rafi-Lata's duet "Ab Haal-e-Dil Ya Haal-e-Jigar Kuchh Naa Puchhiye".

1950 saw Vinod composing for 2 of his best films viz. "Anmol Ratan" and "Wafa". Lata sang her heart out in "Taare Wohi Hai Chaand Wohi Hai" ("Anmol Ratan") , "Apni Apni Kismat Hai" and "Kaga Re Jaa Re Jaa Re" (Wafa), these 3 songs can easily be considered in Lata's Top 25 Hindi songs. Talat Mahmood and Lata's duet "Shikwa Tera Main Gaaon" and Talat's solo "Jab Kisi Ke Rukh Pe Zulfe Aake Lehraane Lagi" are considered in the list of Talat's best songs.  

Vinod's career as a Music Composer lasted for 13 years from 1946 to 1959. In these 13 years, he composed music for ~225 songs from 27 Hindi and 5 Punjabi films. Such was his genius that Vinod composed approximately 80 i.e. 35% of his songs in just 3 years from 1949 to 1951! You would be hugely surprised to know that Asha Bhosale has sung 77 songs for Vinod (47 solo and 30 duets) while Lata Mangeshkar has sung only 22 (13 solo and 9 duets)!! When you wonderd what Asha did before she began her long association with likes of OP, SJ, SD and RD, here is the answer.

After the excellent work in "Anmol Ratan" and "Wafa" in 1950, Vinod composed music for many more films. Some of the noted ones are "Mukhada", "Sabz Baag", "Titli" (1951), "Laadalaa", "Oot Pataang", "Ramman" (1954), "Jalwa" (1955), "Garama Garam" (1957) and "Amar Shaheed" (1959). 3 of his films were released in 1961 after his death in 1959. Very few songs from the above films had the quality same as that from his earlier films. Vinod was a hard-core Punjabi and hence composing music for Punjabi films was his passion. However, circumstances developed such that the entire Punjabi film industry came crumbled down. At the same time, many of Vinod's Hindi films did not do well at the box office in spite of having good quality music. This led Vinod into frustration and impacted his health. As a result he left us for abodely heaven on 25th Dec 1959.  (This story has been narrated by Vinod's son-in-law - Mr. Kelly Mistry)

Though his name depicted humor, Vinod was a serious composer and composed some great songs that music lovers still remember. Sadly, Vinod's career as a composer can be summarized in one of the lines of his own song:

अपनी अपनी किस्मत है, आबाद कोई बरबाद कोई।।

1) Lara Lappa Lara Lappa Layi Rakhda

This song has been inspired by a Punjabi folk song "Jutti Meri Jandiye Pahadiye De Naal". Main singers are G. M. Durrani and Lata; however you can hear Mohammad Rafi in the chorus. The lead male role in the film was played by Motilal - the actor who is remembered for the song "Zindagi Khwab Hai" in Raj Kapoor's film "Jaagate Raho". The female lead role was played by Meena Shorey who has few other hit films to her credit. The great lyrics by Aziz Kashmiri have added fervour to the tune of the song.    

2) Kaga Re Jaa Re Jaa Re

This song is from the 1950 film "Wafa" starring Karan Dewan and Nimmi. This is perhaps the best song Vinod had composed. Knowing that Vinod was a hard core Punjabi, composing such a melodious sad tune would have been a challenge for him, but he has an outstanding work here. The song starts with a small piece on Violin (or perhaps Sarangi) and just before the words begin, one can hear Sitar onl briefly for few seconds, but what impact it creates on the song itself, beautiful! And the way the word "Sandesawa" has been composed and sung by Lataji is mesmerising to say the least.

Vinod's daughter - Veera Mistry - has narrated a short story about this song, about her interaction with the great Asha Bhosale, and how she was fortunate to hear this song - which was origininally sung by Lataji - from Asha ji herself. Such was the magic of this song that even a great singer like Asha ji could not resist herself. You can view her narration here.
