आरंभ-स्वर २ : सखी री सुन बोले पपीहा उस पार (Lata-Asha Rare Duet)

सखी री सुन बोले पपीहा उस पार - मिस मेरी (१९५७) - गीतकार राजेंद्र कृष्ण - संगीतकार हेमंतकुमार - गायिका लता मंगेशकर आणि आशा भोसले

आज एक असे गीत सादर करत आहे जे बऱ्याच जणांनी फारसे ऐकले नसेल. हे गीत आहे १९५७ साली आलेल्या "मिस मेरी" या चित्रपटातील. या गीताचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे लता मंगेशकर आणि आशा भोसले या दोन बहिणींचे दुर्मिळ असे द्वंद्वगीत. या चित्रपटाचे कथाबीजच वेगळे होते. एक अविवाहित तरुण स्त्री केवळ चांगली नोकरी मिळावी म्हणून एका अनोळखी पुरुषाची बायको असल्याचे नाटक करते ही कल्पना त्या काळात करणे केवळ अशक्य होते. हा चित्रपट १९५५ साली आलेल्या तेलगू-तामिळ भाषेतील "मिसम्मा" किंवा "मिसिअम्मा" या चित्रपटाचा रिमेक होता. गंमत म्हणजे हे दोन्ही चित्रपट १९३५ सालच्या "Maanmoyee Girls' School" या चित्रपटाचे रिमेक होते. याच बंगाली चित्रपटावरून दिग्दर्शक अनंत माने यांनी १९५७ साली "झाकली मूठ" हा मराठी चित्रपट बनवला होता! हिंदी आवृत्तीत प्रमुख नायकाच्या भूमिकेत आहेत त्या काळातील दक्षिण भारतीय चित्रपटातील सुपरस्टार जेमिनी गणेशन (यांचीच मुलगी सुप्रसिद्ध अभिनेत्री रेखा). किशोरकुमारची भूमिका नायकाची नसली तरी भाव खाऊन जाते. असो.

"मिस मेरी" या चित्रपटात एकूण १० गाणी आहेत. त्यापैकी मोहम्मद रफी यांनी एकूण ४ गाणी तर लता मंगेशकर यांनी एकूण ६ गाणी गायली होती. हेमंतकुमार यांचे या चित्रपटासाठी दिलेले संगीत हे त्यांच्या नेहमीच्या शैलीपेक्षा संपूर्णतः वेगळे आहे. हेमंतकुमार यांच्या संगीत कारकिर्दीचा आढावा मी त्यांच्यावरील ब्लॉगमध्ये याआधीच घेतला आहे. तो इथे वाचता येईल.

"सखी री सुन बोले पपीहा उस पार" गाणे सुरु होते लताच्या गोड तानेने, पडद्यावर दिसतो तो मिस मेरीचा म्हणजेच मीनाकुमारीचा सुंदर, सोज्ज्वळ आणि प्रसन्न चेहरा. तिची केशभूषाही त्या काळाला शोभेशी. ती तिच्या शिष्येला गाणे शिकवत असतानाच प्रसंग. गुरुसाठी म्हणजेच मीनाकुमारीसाठी हेमंतकुमारांनी वापरलाय लताचा आवाज तर शिष्येसाठी आशाचा. 

हे गाणे हेमंतकुमार यांनी खमाज रागात बांधले आहे. हे गाणे ऐकल्यानंतर ती एक चीजच वाटते. मूळ तेलुगू/तामिळ गाण्यात कर्नाटक संगीतातील राग सुधारस वापरला आहे (मी पहिल्यांदाच ऐकले या रागाचे नाव), पण हेमंतकुमार यांची चाल मूळ गाण्यापेक्षा वेगळी आहे. गीतकार राजेंद्रकृष्ण यांनी चीजेला साजेशी अशी सुंदर संस्कृतप्रचुर हिंदी शब्दरचना केली आहे. "बारम्बार" हा शब्द मी तरी गाण्यामध्ये प्रथमच ऐकला आहे 😃

सुरुवातीला लताचे धृपद आहे, साधारण ४० व्या सेकंदाला आशा धृपद गायला सुरुवात करते. आणि आपल्या लक्षात येतं की आशाने लताच्या तोडीस तोड गायलं आहे! पुढील गाणे म्हणजे सरगम, आलापी आणि शेवटी २ मिनिटे आणि ३८ सेकंदांपासून गाण्याची जलद लय आणि त्या लयीत घेतलेल्या पल्लेदार ताना यांची मेजवानीच आहे जणू.  आशाची शेवटची ७-८ सेकंदांची जबरदस्त तान या गाण्याला वेगळ्या उंचीवर नेऊन ठेवते. लता आणि आशाशिवाय या गाण्याची कल्पना करणे सुद्धा अशक्य आहे. त्या दोघींची कमालीची एकरूपता (synchronization) हे या गाण्याचे आणखीन एक वैशिष्ट्य वाटते. तर असे हे गाणे जरूर ऐका आणि त्याचा आनंद घ्या.

Today in “Aarambha-Swar”, I am presenting a song which many would not have heard before. It’s a rare duet sung by two of the legendary singers – Lata and Asha. The 1957 movie “Miss Mary” was an exceptional movie from the story point of view in the sense that it showed an unmarried woman pretends to be married (to a completely unknown man) just to get a job! No one could have imagined this situation in 1957.

The Hindi movie was a remake of a Telugu movie viz. “Missamma” and a Tamil movie “Missiamma”. Howevr what was more interesting was that both these movies were itself a remake of a 1935 Bengali movie "Maanmoyee Girls' School"! Director Anant Mane had made a Marathi Movie viz. “Zakali Mooth” in 1957 based on this Bengali movie. The Hindi movie had cast the then Superstar of Tamil film industry Gemini Ganesan (well known actor Rekha’s father) as the male lead. Kishore Kumar also stars in the movie. Though he is not in the main role, his performance is impactful.

“Miss Mary” contained 10 songs. Mohammad Rafi had sung 4 of them while Lata rendered her voice to 6. The music composed by Hemant Kumar is surprisingly very different than his style, far from Bengali music influence. The song “Sakhi Ri Sun Bole Papiha Us Paar” starts with a beautiful Taan by Lata. Song was picturized on Meena Kumari, who unlike her usual tragic roles, has performed quite a comic, romantic role in this movie! In the song, Miss Mary (Meena Kumari) is teaching music to her disciple. Hemant Kumar has used Lata’s voice for the Guru (Meena Kumari) while Asha renders her voice for the disciple.

The song was composed in the Raaga Khamaj. When we listen to it, it sounds like a pure classical rendering. The original Telugu/Tamil songs were composed in Raaga Sutharas (I heard this name for the first time!). However, the Hindi composition by Hemant da is different than the original ones. The legendary Lyricist – Rajendra Krishna – pens a beautiful poem (if I may call it so) in Sanskritized Hindi. I heard the word “Barambar” (i.e. often) used in a Hindi song for the first time.

Lata starts the song, and after about 35 seconds comes Asha’s turn. Then one realizes that Asha has matched Lata in her singing prowess. The song is full of Sargam and Aalaap. From 02:38 minutes, the song picks up a fast rhythm. Both Lata and Asha deliver the long Taanas which sound so lovely. Asha ends the song with her 7-8 seconds Taan which carries the song to a different level altogether.

It is impossible to imagine this song to be sung by anyone else other than Lata and Asha, such is their mastery and skilfulness. The synchronization between the two great singers in this song is something to be cherished. Hope you will enjoy the song. Thank you.
