विशेष आरंभ-स्वर ३ : वंदे मातरम

वन्दे मातरम - आनंदमठ (१९५२) - गीतकार बंकिमचंद्र - संगीतकार आणि गायक हेमंतकुमार, गायिका लता मंगेशकर

ऋषी बंकिमचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय यांच्या अलौकिक प्रतिभेतून साकारलेली "आनंदमठ" ही कादंबरी म्हणजे भारतीय साहित्यातील एक अजरामर कलाकृती आहे. १७७० च्या दशकात तत्कालीन बंगालमधील (आजचा बिहार, पश्चिम बंगाल व बांगला देश) योद्धा संन्याशांनी इंग्रजांच्या जुलमी राजवटीविरुद्ध दिलेल्या यशस्वी लढ्याचे वर्णन यात आहे. गुरुदेवांच्या आनंदमठात हे संन्यासी अध्यात्माबरोबरच युद्धाचेही शिक्षण घेत असतात. बंगाल प्रांतात भीषण दुष्काळ पसरलेला असताना इंग्रज अधिकारी हे निर्दयपणे करवसुली करत असतात. त्याला प्राणपणाने विरोध करणारे योद्धे संन्यासी आणि इंग्रजांचे सैन्य यांच्यात लढाई होऊन संन्याशांचा विजय होतो. त्यानंतर विजयगीत म्हणून "वन्दे मातरम" हे गीत सर्वजण गातात असा प्रसंग आहे.

चित्रपटात हे गीत प्रदीप कुमार (पदार्पणाचा चित्रपट) आणि अजित (हिंदी चित्रपटातील कुख्यात खलनायक) यांच्यावर चित्रित झाले आहे. संगीतकार म्हणून हेमंत कुमार यांचा हा पहिलाच हिंदी चित्रपट. चित्रपटात एकूण ५  गाणी आहेत त्यातील गीता दत्त यांनी २ सोलो आणि २ द्वंद्वगीते गायली आहे. आज सादर करत असलेले हे गीत स्वतः हेमंतकुमार आणि लता यांनी वेगवेगळे सोलो गायले आहे. दोन्ही गीतांचा आनंदही वेगळा आहे. हेमंतकुमार यांच्या गाण्यात त्यांच्या गळ्यातील आर्तता, शांतता पुरेपूर उतरली आहे तर लताच्या गाण्यात संतापातून आलेली आक्रमकता आणि जोश आहे.

हेमंतकुमार यांनी हे गीत भैरवी रागात बांधले आहे पण त्यात थोडा मालकंस रागही मिसळला आहे असे वाटते. गाण्याची सुरुवात हेमंतकुमार यांच्या आर्त स्वरांनी होते. पार्श्वभूमीवर हलकासा पियानो वाजतोय. १५ व्या सेकंदाला कोरस गायला लागते, लय बदलते, ठेका बदलतो आणि गाण्याला एकदम उठाव येतो. "मातरम" मधल्या "माSSS"  या स्वरावरची छोटीशी हरकत खासच आहे, हे गाणे वीररसातले असल्याने त्याचा अनुभव येण्यासाठी दोन कडव्यांच्या मध्ये व्हायोलिन, ड्रम, तालवाद्य यांचा खुबीने वापर केला आहे. 

दुसऱ्या कडव्यात मृदंग वाजताना ऐकू येतो. या कडव्यात संस्कृत आणि बंगाली या दोनही भाषांचा वापर केला आहे. शेवटच्या कडव्यात आपल्या मातृभूमीचे वर्णन करताना, तिला प्रणाम करताना त्या नायकाच्या झालेल्या व्याकुळ मनोवस्थेचे यथायोग्य दर्शन घडवण्यासाठी संगीतकाराने गीताची लय संथ केली आहे, जी कडवे संपताना कोरस मुखातून पुन्हा जलद होते. ही दोन्ही परिवर्तने (transformations) अप्रतिम आहेत.

"वन्दे मातरम" या गीताला आजपर्यंत अनेक जणांनी चाली लावल्या, सर्वच चाली उत्तम आहेत. पण चित्रपटातील हे गाणे हे प्रचंड गाजले. २००३ मध्ये BBC World Service ने १६५ देशातून केलेल्या सार्वकालीन सर्वोत्कृष्ट १० गाण्यांमध्ये लता मंगेशकर यांनी गायलेल्या याच गीताला दुसरे स्थान मिळाले होते (संदर्भ: विकिपीडिया)!

लताचे हे गीत "आरंभ-स्वर" च्या व्याख्येत बसत नाही कारण स्वर आणि संगीत दोन्ही एकदमच सुरु होते. पण इथे सादर करण्याचे कारण दोन्ही गाणी एकत्र ऐकण्याचा आनंद काही औरच आहे. लताचे गाणे एकाच वेळेस आक्रमकता आणि करुणता यांनी ओतप्रोत भरलेले आहे. हे गाणे गीता बाली यांच्यावर चित्रित झाले आहे. मुद्राभिनयात त्यांचा हात कोणी धरू शकत नाही. शांतीच्या भूमिकेत गीता बाली यांनी जान ओतली आहे. त्यामुळे अभिनय आणि गायन या दोन्हींच्या जबरदस्त मिश्रणाने हे गाणे लाजवाब बनले आहे.

लताच्या आवाजातील "मातरम" या शब्दावर घेतलेली प्रत्येक तान लक्ष देऊन ऐकली तर त्यातले वेगळेपण (variation) लक्षात येईल, विशेषतः गाण्याच्या शेवटी हेमंतकुमार व लता दोघांनी एकापाठोपाठ घेतलेल्या ताना आणि त्यांचा प्रभाव जबरदस्त आहे. 

चला तर ऐकू या हे अतिशय सुंदर वीररसाने भरलेले गीत - दोन्ही versions - हेमंतकुमार आणि लताचे.

Vande Mataram - Anand Math (1952) - Lyricist Rishi Bankim Chandra - Composer Hemant Kumar - Singers Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangesh (each Solo)

The novel "Anandamath" by Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is an immortal masterpiece of Indian literature. It describes the successful struggle of the warrior Sanyasis in the then Bengal (today's Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh) against the oppressive British rule in the 1770s. In Gurudev's Anand Math, these Sanyasis are learning warfare along with spirituality. The British officers were collecting taxes ruthlessly when there is a severe famine in the province of Bengal. The Sannyasis won the battle between the warriors who were bitterly opposed to him and the British army. After that, the song "Vande Mataram" is sung as a victory song.

The song in the film is picturized on Pradeep Kumar (debut film) and Ajit (a notorious villain in Hindi cinema). This is Hemant Kumar's first Hindi film as a musician. The film has 5 songs in total; of which Geeta Dutt has sung 2 solos and 2 duets. This particular song is sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The joy of both songs is also different. Hemant Kumar's voice has the calmness and a sense of soothing; while Lata's has the aggression and the passion that comes from the anger of the character in the film.

Hemant Kumar has composed this song in Raaga Bhairavi but it seems that he has mixed it with a little Raaga Malkans. The song begins with Hemant Kumar's anguished voice. There is also a light piano playing in the background. In the 15th second, the chorus starts singing, the rhythm changes, the beat changes and the song takes off. As these songs are from heroic songs and violin, drums and rhythm instruments are used extensively in the three verses to give the experience of it.

In the second verse, you can hear the drums playing. Both Sanskrit and Bengali languages ​​are used in this verse. In the last verse, the composer has slowed the rhythm of the song to give a proper view of the hero's troubled mood as he describes his motherland and bows to her. The rhythm becomes faster through the chorus singing at the end of the verse. Both transformations are unparalleled.

"Vande Mataram" has been sung by many people till date, all of them are excellent. But these songs in the film were hugely popular. In 2003, the same song by Lata Mangeshkar was ranked second in the BBC World Service's list of the top 10 songs of all-time greats from 165 countries (reference: Wikipedia)!

Lata's songs do not fit the definition of "Aarambha-Swar" because both the Swara and the music start at the same time. But the reason for presenting it here is something more than the pleasure of listening to both songs together. Lata's songs are imbued with aggression and compassion at the same time. This song is illustrated on Geeta Bali who was a master of facial expressions. Geeta Bali has played the role of Shanti superbly.

If you listen carefully to every melody on the word "Mataram" in Lata's voice, you will notice the variation, especially the melody when both Hemant Kumar and Lata sing one after the other towards the end of the song and its effect is mesmerizing to say the least.
