====================================================================
Dear Friends,
India has a great variety of cultures, music, and languages, however often we are completely ignorant about it except that of our own native. This is unfortunately true even for the music that enriches our lives. However, music is so magical that it destroys all the boundaries such as castes, regions, religions, and even nations. The song that I have presented today will portray the same feelings of music being a common thread that binds all of us.
It was the year 1990 when the Superstar of Malayalam Cinema - Mohanlal - decided to form his own production company viz. "Pranavam Arts". He then goes on to produce the first movie "His Highness Abdullah" independently through his own banner. He approaches his long-time friends Sibi Malayil and Raveendran to respectively direct and compose music for his film. Raveendran composed 5 songs and wanted the legendary singer Yesudas to sing those. However, Yesudas had made up his mind not to sing for the films again and pursue singing Carnatic Classical only. When he hears that the song is going to be picturized on Mohanlal and he himself is the producer of the film, Yesudas agrees to sing it for him! This proved to be a historical moment for the Malayali film industry. "His Highness Abdullah" was hugely successful commercially in Kerala and Tamilnadu. It also won 4 national awards. All the songs of the film were super-duper hits. The trio of Kathapram+Raveendran+Yesudas went on to create memorable songs for a long time.
The story behind the song:
Maharaj Udayvarma (Nedumudi Venu) is the head of a very rich Royal family. Some of his relatives have been extremely greedy and hence want to kill Udayvarma to acquire all of his wealth. They hire a singer from Mumbai viz. Abdullah (Mohanlal). Abdullah disguises himself as Ananthan Namboodri and enters the palace citing the reason as studying the palace architecture. Maharaj Udayvarma does not like Abdullah but gives him permission to stay on for a couple of days. The day when Abdullah was about to go back, he sings the song "Pramadhavanam Veendum" and is successful in pleasing Maharaj Udayvarma. Thus, Abdullah, as Ananthan Namboodri continues to stay in the palace. What happens next? Does Maharaj Udayvarma get to know Ananthan's real face/name? Does Ananthan marry Radha? Are the relatives successful in killing Maharaj Udayvarma? To know all of this, you will have to watch this entertaining movie.

Highlights of the Song:
Raveendran has beautifully composed the song "Pramadhavanam Veendum" in Hindustani Raag viz. Jog. The song starts with a breathtaking Aalaap which lasts for about 39 seconds. Hearing this, Radha (Gauthami) is so happy that she eagerly runs to see who is singing it. That movement has been wonderfully captured through the playing of the violin, so much so that the speed of music matches that of Radha. Violin, Mrudangam, Flute, and Veena are the main instruments used primarily in the song to create an out-of-the-world effect.
What can I say about the legend himself! Yesudas has poured his soul into this song. His voice and tonal quality, his extraordinary rendering, his deep masculine voice (Kharj), his immense skill to traverse in all Saptaka, and finally his superb singing enhance the beauty of the composition. He has certainly taken this song to a different level. You feel like God has gifted you this song!
Music Composer Raveendran, in one of his interviews, has shared a couple of his experiences after the movie was released on 30th Sept 1990.
Raveendran was waiting for a bus on Kottayam Bus Stand. It was extremely crowded and hence no one was able to hear others. From nowhere, "Pramadhavanam Veendum" started playing on the loudspeaker. And gosh!! The entire bus stand went completely silent. One could even hear a drop of the pin at that time. Such was the magic of the composition and the great Yesudas. At that moment, Raveendran realized the greatness of Yesudas and what he (Yesudas) meant for the Malayalee people. Raveendran was so touched by the whole atmosphere that he was in tears and could not speak for a while.
Another incident happened when Raveendran was traveling to North India. While having lunch at a roadside Punjabi Dhaba, the Dhaba was playing the Punjabi Bhangra songs as usual. However, it suddenly played the "Pramadhavanam Veendum" song! After every 3-4 songs, the "Pramadhavanam Veendum" played, the sequence continued. Raveendran was extremely surprised and checked with the Sardarji owner of the Dhaba about playing a Malayali song. The Saradarji had a Malayali friend who was very close. He used to play this song very often, and thus Saradarji developed a liking towards this song. The Malayali friend was killed in an accident. Saradarji used to play this song in his remembrance. This moved Raveendran a lot and he realized that music has no boundaries.
Well, friends, I hope you take out time to listen to this God's gift. The video of the song along with its Lyrics is shared above just before the English version begins. Hope you will like it and enjoy the song. Thank you.
