"लाहौर" नावाचा चित्रपट १९४९ साली स्वतंत्र भारतात प्रदर्शित होतो. संपूर्ण कथेत चित्रपटातील मुख्य दोन कुटुंबे ही लाहोरमध्ये राहत असतात आणि अखंड भारताचे दोन तुकडे झाल्यावर तेथील भयानक परिस्थितीमुळे त्यांना लाहोर सोडून भारतात यावे लागते यापलीकडे लाहोरबद्दल काहीही नाही. जसं चित्रपटाचं तसंच कथेचंही आहे, सुरुवातीला दोन कुटुंबांतील काही व्यक्तींभोवती फिरत असलेली कथा पुढे विस्कळीत होत जाते व आपला इतका गोंधळ उडतो की काय चाललंय हेच समजेनासे होते. असो. तरीही हा चित्रपट लक्षात राहतो तो त्यातील गाण्यांमुळे.

"लाहौर" मध्ये तब्बल १० गाणी आहेत. त्यातील करण दिवाण (२), मन्ना डे, G. M. दुर्राणी (प्रत्येकी १), करण दिवाण-लता मंगेशकर यांची २ द्वंद्वगीते आणि लताची ४ सोलो गाणी अशी भरपूर मेजवानी आहे. श्यामसुंदरने यात आपले सर्वस्व पणाला लावले आहे. त्याच्या सर्वोत्तम चित्रपटांमधे १९४९ सालातील "बाज़ार" आणि "लाहौर" चा समावेश करावा लागेल. श्यामसुंदरबद्दल मी विस्ताराने लिहिलंय, ते जरूर वाचा -

चमन (करण दिवाण) आणि लिलो (नर्गिस) हे लाहौरमध्ये लहानपणापासूनचे शेजारी, मित्र आणि पुढे एकाच कॉलेजात जाणारे. त्यामुळे अर्थातच एकमेकांच्या प्रेमात! पुढे चमनला मुंबईमध्ये शिकण्यासाठी शिष्यवृत्ती मिळते. ही बातमी कळताच लिलो कोसळून जाते. आणि त्या अवस्थेतच हे अप्रतिम विरहगीत सुरु होते.
नज़र से दूर जानेवाले, दिल से दूर ना करना
मेरी आँखों को रोने पर, कहीं मजबूर ना करना
बहारें फिर भी आएँगी, मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे
घटाएँ फिर भी छाएँगी, मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे

लताच्या काळीज पिळवटून टाकणाऱ्या आवाजाने गाणं सुरु होतं. पहिल्या ओळीच्या मागून अगदी मंद असे व्हायोलिन वाजते, आवाजही दुरून येतो कारण कॅमेरा चमनवर असतो. दुसऱ्या ओळीत कॅमेरा जसा लिलोवर येतो तसे पार्श्वसंगीत वाढते हे दिग्दर्शक आणि संगीतकाराचे कसब! "बहारें" शब्दावरची लताने घेतलेली छोटीशी हरकत अप्रतिम आहे. "मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे " या ओळीत सामावलेले दुःख नर्गिसने तिच्या अभिनयातून, श्यामसुंदरने त्यांच्या चालीतून आणि लताने तिच्या गळ्यातून असं काही उतरवलंय की आपल्याही डोळ्यात नकळत पाणी येते.

इशारों से बुलाएगी, मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे

या कडव्यात "जहाँ छुप छुप के हम मिलते" नंतर ओळ पूर्ण न करता संगीत वाजते, ते का असा विचार केला तर मला असे वाटते की जेंव्हा आपण अतीव दुःखात असतो तेंव्हा कधीकधी पूर्ण वाक्य बोलू शकत नाही. कदाचित हाच विचार संगीतकाराने केला असावा कारण यानंतर येणारे संगीत हे लिलोच्या मनातील स्पंदने दर्शवतात. "गली" या शब्दावरची हरकत ऐकावी अशी.
सन्देसा प्यार का लायेगी, सावन की जवाँ राते
पवन झूलेगी गायेगी, मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे
बहारें फिर भी आएँगी, मगर हम तुम जुदा होंगे

पहिल्या आणि दुसऱ्या अंतऱ्यात संगीत नाहीये. या अंतऱ्याची चालही वेगळी आहे. "सावन" शब्दावरची हरकत लाजवाब!
३ कडव्यांचे हे गाणे हे लताच्या अप्रतिम गाण्यांपैकी एक आहे. तिने या चित्रपटातील २ गाणी - "बहारें फिर भी आयेगी" आणि "सुन लो सजन मेरी बात" - तिच्या आवडत्या गाण्यांच्या संग्रहात घेतली आहेत! या गाण्याचा राग ओळखता येत नाही; मतमतांतरे आहेत. व्हायोलिन आणि मटक्याचा ठेका या दोन प्रमुख वाद्यांवर संपूर्ण गाण्याची रचना श्यामसुंदरने केली आहे यावरून त्याची प्रतिभा लक्षात येते.
तर ऐकू या हे नितांतसुंदर गीत. आशा करतो की तुम्हाला आवडेल. नेहमीप्रमाणे कसे वाटले ते जरूर कळवा. धन्यवाद.

1949 saw a film with the name “Lahore” being released in the
independent India! The plot revolved around 2 families living in Lahore. They
had to migrate to India due to the riotous situation arising in Lahore at that
time. That’s it really, in a nutshell, what the movie is all about. The overall
story of the movie gets so confusing with the increased number of characters as
the film moves on. However, thanks to the great music by Shyam Sunder that we
remember it’s wonderful, sweet songs more than the film itself.

The film comprises of total 10 songs, out of which Karan Dewan
(2), Manna Dey and G. M. Durrani (1 each), Karan Dewan and Lata 2 duets and 4
solo songs by Lata are a treat to the ears. “Lahore” and “Bazar” both released
in 1949 are arguably the best films of Shyam Sunder from his brief career
spanning just about 15-20 films. I had covered Shyam Sunder’s music composition

"Shyam Sundar - An extraordinary composer"Chaman (Karan Dewan) and Lilo (Nargis) are childhood friends
as well as neighbours in Lahore. Both study in the same college and later fall
in love with each other. Chaman’s family faces economic crisis and thus must
rely upon Chaman’s fate. Chaman is awarded scholarship for further studies in Mumbai
(then Bombay). This news shocks and saddens Lilo to the core. She starts to sing
her emotions out straight from the heart.
We then hear Lata’s impeccably tremulous voice depicting
Nargis’ emotions. The first line is accompanied by a low Violin sound playing
in the background, the sound is heard from far since the camera focuses on
Chaman getting ready to leave for Bombay. When the camera zooms on Nargis, the volume
of the song and music become louder, as we realize. This is where the skill of
the Director and Music composer come in play.
Lilo’s world that has fallen apart has been perfectly
portrayed by Nargis through her act, by Shyam Sunder through his composition
and Lata through her emotive singing.
There are few beauty spots of the composition in the way
Lata sings the words “Baharein”, “Gali”, “Ishaaron Se”, “Sawan”, etc.
Lata has sung her heart out in this song. She had included 2
songs from this movie viz. “Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi” and “Sun Lo Sajan Meri
Baat” in her favourites list! This song is a mix of many Ragas. Violin
and the Beat are carrying the entire composition through the song. This is the genius
of Shyam Sunder.
